I wont disagree with what you post on the CO boards as I do not read them. My comment was more to the AA and UA boards and I should have so specified. As to those boards, I didnt say you dont always post on FF issues, I said I didnt recall you ever posting on them. The flip comment about "500 miles" is fairly classic in trying to evade the main point of my post as well as to attempt to make light of my suggestion that I am more appreciative of posts relating to flying than to the business of flying. However, let me add that I find absolutely no value in your posts on the latter subject either.

And that's OK. Everyone is not going to find value in every post. What is NOT OK is when a FlyerTalker or group of FTers decide to respond to posts with incessant personal attacks instead of well-reasoned arguments, as some FTers have apparently committed themselves to doing.

Classic. You really have no idea how to converse with adults (or even intelligent children, for that matter.)

You really, really, really should stop embarrassing yourself.

GadgetFreak Aug 12, 2003 6:00 pm

Heh, we both thought that was classic.....

And indeed it was.

Dang, I was waiting for the "ad hominem" remark. Very disappointed, Damien.

He is playing hard to get since I said I was disappointed not to be on his enemies list. That being said, I was very careful not to make an personal attack (or an ad hominem attack as it is known in the FT vernacular).

While I'm reluctant to enter the fray, as a frequent visitor to the AA, CO, and UA forums, I honestly cannot recall a single constructive post generated by avek00 in my admittedly limited time on FlyerTalk. And I know that in both the AA and UA forums, avek00 has repeatedly posted messages that amount to little more that thinly-veiled insults that "your favorite airline sucks." Whether vaguely disguised in business-speak or not, those posts are as unwelcome as they are unhelpful. For that reason, I cannot fathom why anyone would support avek00's candidacy for the TalkBoard, however anemic such a body politic may be.

One day perhaps avek00 will display the maturity and restraint inherent in a valuable FlyerTalk member, and essential in a FlyerTalk leader. We can only hope. In the meantime, perhaps avek00 would do well to read Dale Carnegie's essential treatise How to Win Friends & Influence People. Again, we can only hope.

Read a book? But where would avek get time to play with fun games like this in between READING and posting on FT? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Would locking this thread be considered a mercy killing?

While I typically stay completely out of this kind of stuff, I could not help but read this thread as I was shocked to see the title. cAA1 has summed up how I feel - avek's posts on UA and AA drive me crazy as they seemed to be designed to 'get a response' rather than add to the spirit of the community. I think it is a shame how many threads have been ruined by argumentative comments about UA or AA when the people who truly fly those airlines are having genuine discussions.

Just my 2 cents.

I absolutely DO NOT want this thread to be closed down.

This thread serves as a useful illustration that although times have changed, the destructive posting behaviors of some have not. FlyerTalk veterans have been reminded, and newer FTers are learning, of the true colors of a select few posters who very nearly destroyed FT altogether in the past due to constant flame wars and personal attacks. It is wise to remember that the attackers have, in some instances, been BANNED from FlyerTalk by Randy on MULTIPLE occasions.

Therefore, I see a great deal of usefulness from this thread. The Community has yet again been made aware of the need for vigorous efforts to finally put an end to the frequent attackers. And just as importantly, the frequent attackers have made clear not only the identities of themselves, but also of those who WILL put an end to their destructive ways.

Sooooooooo.. is it fair to say that you're not exactly getting the picture here?

Jon:

IIRC, you were here when the frequent personal attackers I'm referring to very nearly destroyed FlyerTalk. It was an awful time for the Community, and I refuse to see it ever happen again.

I don't have a problem with people vehemently disagreeing with my posts. I DO have a problem with ad hominem attacks, as does FlyerTalk itself. IMHO, there's a problem when the only way someone can respond to a post is with a personal attack that is irrelevant to the issues being discussed.

I hope that your statement above is not an endorsement of personal attacks in any way, shape, or form. Consider: though I might be the "chosen target" for the attackers today, you or someone else could become their target tomorrow should you disagree with their views. That is why I have committed myself to helping eliminate personal attackers from FT.
