I sent my parents there on a C&P stay, and they mentioned that the breakfast was 47 Euros!

Good point regarding the price...ours was included in our room rate. I wouldn't pay that much if it weren't.

In all of my travels to Italy, I don't know that I've even paid 7 euros for breakfast let alone 47 euros. A croissant, fresh squeezed OJ and cappucino are wonderful and affordable at any local cafe.

we have a weekend booking here next month. using starwood points. i'm a little nervous now because after reading all of this is sound like you are defintely going to get the worst room in the house on an award reservation.
pondering if I should move to Westin or St. Regis? any advice?

I got an upgrade on my award stay. It wasn't a great upgrade, but at least I wasn't in the lowest level room and it was quite nice and comfy.

Looking forward to an upcoming stay for our anniversary -- was able to use C&P for everything but the last night (had to book separate award night using points only).
When making award reservations, the "Nonsmoking" checkbox (under Room options) was gray and could not be selected. Our reservation confirmation indicates that we do indeed have a queen/smoking room. Hoping not to spend our anniversary in a smoky room (allergies/asthma), though we do recognize that this can be hard to avoid in Europe/Italy...
I haven't been able to find anything that indicates whether non-smoking rooms exist/are available. It sounds like I should reach out to the hotel before we arrive -- does anyone have contact information (beyond the reservation emails listed above) and/or other advice?

I would definitely let the hotel know what your preferences are, however, as they make every attempt to honor them in this instance. I would call The Luxury Collection and ask for their assistance on this. 800-325-3589.

You should rebook. There are single rooms in some older European hotels, likely meant for staff back in the day when one traveled with servants. You can't count on an upgrade to get you out of a single room - nor are you paying for two people to stay. Further, Starwood guarantees the bedding that you book. It's only one instance, but one person with platinum status reported that her hotel refused to upgrade her because they had no comparable bedding in another room.

I switched to the Hotel Eden from the St. Regis, and was upgraded from a standard room to a studio room (one weekend free night, the other paid). Although it wasn't the frescoed room that you see on the website, it's quite nice. Penhaligon's (Quercus) toiletries! No letter or anything from the manager upon arrival. Wired internet is 23 Euros/day.
The downside is that my shower stall drains very slowly, and upon using it for the first time, I flooded my bathroom. The front desk had somebody take a look at it, and he said "it was normal". Considering I was taking a quick shower, I brought up the issue again with the front desk, and was told that they've never had any similar complaints and "it was normal".
So by the time I finished shampooing and rinsing my hair, the water level was almost high enough to leak into the bathroom. So I had to turn off the water and then lather myself up, followed by a quick rinse. A bit annoying, but I'm not sure if it's worthy enough to write a complaint to customer service.
The breakfast buffet is a whopping 53,90 Euros. Great view though. There's a limited a la carte menu. For example, an omelette was 18 Euros, and a coffee or tea was 8,5.
Plumbing issues notwithstanding, I'm quite impressed with the Hotel Eden. Although if I were to come back to Rome, I'd probably pick the St. Regis for location alone.
Edited to add: When I checked out, I was politely asked to write a postive review on TripAdvisor if I enjoyed my stay. Having read the overwhelmingly poor reviews prior to my arrival, I can understand why the hotel would want some positive feedback.

All - just wanted to thank you all who helpd me with our trip to Italy.
We just returned from our trip, stayed 5 days and 4 nights at the Hotel Eden using Cash & Points. As Gold I reached out to the Hotel to request an upgraded room as it was a special occasion and received one.
My perspective....this is a great hotel with a great staff! It is walking distance to everything! Literally 1 block away from the Spanish Steps, which was great as we relaxed there almost each night. Right across the street of Villa Borghese. Walking distance to the Piazza del Popolo (7 min), Trevi Fountain (15 min), Colosseum (25-30 min), Pantheon and Piazza Navona (20 min), Piazza della Repubblica (25 min) and Vatican (was 1 hour and would not recommend it).
We checked into the hotel the lobby is truly old world...marble throughout the lobby, the finest wood and silks used for furniture, this hotel has a lot of class. Even the elevators had the old world charm as they were smaller and could only accommodate about 4 people comfortably. We were escorted up to our upgraded room on the top floor where we had small terrace with magnificent view of the tops of the Trinità dei Monti, with Basilica di San Pietro in the background...it made for some of the most amazing sunsets.
The restaurant at the top of the hotel, La Terrazza, easily has the best views of the city! The price for dinner is expensive so we opted to have drinks and watch the sunset up their one night, one of our most memorable evenings. The staff was very courteous, professional and was more than willing to take our photographs multiple times.
The Concierge was by far the most knowledgeable that we had on any of our trips and was very helpful. Departing Roma we needed to take the train to Napoli and he helped organize everything for our trip. He could have easily charges us to do it himself, instead he took the time to tell me what I needed to do and printed all the train time tables.
Overall, this is a great hotel and yes is it expensive as it is a Luxury Hotel. May would argue us it is worth the price for the charm, staff, views and location? Find alternatives, like C&P or Points or other deals. Many reasons for the poor or negative feedabck on TripAdvisors in my opinon is because, many people are use to the deals that the US offers....Europe is expensive and you pay for what you get. Yes, most hotels in Europe offer free breakfast, this one didn't. We were very happy with our stay and I would recommend it.^
Thanks again guys for all the help -- very much apprecaited!

I agree with SanDiego1K, either rebook or advise the hotel immediately. I do travel solo, and generally book a 'single' room. Many times I have received an e mail from european hotels asking 'if I am truely' travelling solo, as they will charge me an additional fee if they find that there is another person sharing my room! As for a single room, I indeed did get a very small single bedded room in both the 4 Points Koln, LM Koln, Westin Union Sq SF, Westn Milan as well as other hotels worldwide. On the other hand, I've gotten fantastically large suites, some with great veiws in Venice, Florence, Warsaw, Barcelona etc-- when booking a 'single'.

Maybe people with no status could worry about this, but I would think that even as Gold you should get an upgrade as a single.
