The training department advises that the policy is the same regardless of whether it is an award reservation or a paid reservation. Any change in status of this sort requires that new availability is checked and, if possible, a new reservation made in its place. An existing award or paid reservation should not be able to be converted to a promotional award reservation.

planning a meeting - can i get points/credit for rooms?

Hi William,

So i'm organizing a small meeting for work in mid July and i will likely need to book a block of 20 rooms at a Westin in a major metro city. Somehow a long time ago i was also set up as a starwood preferred planner. Can i somehow make this booking work for me in terms of getting credits towards this promo (beyond the 1 room which will obviously be for my own use)?

Thanks!

This is a really stupid rule. If you already have a certain room type booked, it's "available." I could see not converting a paid reservation, but not converting a points reservation is pretty ridiculous. I love the fact that Hyatt does this and hopefully SPG will follow suit eventually.

It would allow all sort of "speculative" bookings and be quite unfair to people who play by the rules.

I totally agree that this has been a problem with Hyatt and I'm not advocating that they follow what some Hyatt reps have done and allowed bookings without the points or FFNs in your account.

But if you have the points in your account and have the award reservation confirmed, I don't see the risk of speculative bookings as a strong enough reason to prevent converting those stays to the promo nights.

Then if you have the money in your wallet, why not allow booking standard rooms with cash with the ability to convert to promo nights? What's the difference?

I wouldn't object if the member were willing and able to book the standard award as non-cancelable/non-refundable. But I suspect that the rule is there because the privilege has gotten abused in the past. Any abuse of this rule can be very costly to hotels if there are last-minute cancellations of speculative bookings.

While I'm not sure speculative booking would be breaking any rules (although I could have missed something in the promo's or SPG's T&C), I think I agree with the policy. The free nights have a finite shelf life and I would think SPG would want to give those that earned them every opportunity to use them rather than have folks hold onto award space they may or may not use.

i disagree respectfully. i like the rule as it prevents speculative bookings which could decrease inventory for others.

Normally, rooms booked as a block do not get credited to a Preferred Planner's account as a stay. Unless they do, this won't work.

Does the Westin Napa's Delux rooms can be used in this promo? I heard the Westin have very limited number of Traditional rooms. It's almost impossible to get them unless you book way out in advance for those traditional rooms.

No, only the traditional room types would be available for use with this promotion.

Well, it's work related and I spend around 220 nights per year at hotels. So nothing really exciting here. Plus The Nines is not that great of a hotel. During my last 3 week stay I got no upgrade and no welcome present. The only Plat recognition I received was the lounge access which I rarely use. But I AM excited about not having to travel for 4 weeks!

Two problems with that:

1. I am not married. 220 n/y BIB should tell you the sad story.
2. It's a business stay, so no wife allowed...and...see 1.

I know I could do hotel hopping but after a long work day on the road I am not really in the mood to pack my stuff in the evening, check out in the morning, check back in and go back to work.
