If one makes the reservation using SPG award points could one then seamlessly exchange this promotion's certificates for the points?
The training department advises that the policy is the same regardless of whether it is an award reservation or a paid reservation. Any change in status of this sort requires that new availability is checked and, if possible, a new reservation made in its place. An existing award or paid reservation should not be able to be converted to a promotional award reservation.
