+1. I'm not really thrilled about this promo... Unless I switch hotels 3x a week (i.e., more cost for the hotel), and get all of my ski weekends in 2011 paid for... On second thought, not worth it.

Maybe it's time in this quarter to get status in Hilton/Hyatt?

While you may maximize benefits from this promotion, if you barely achieve Platinum or Gold status each year this type of activity could cause you to lose out on achieving such status.
No, it couldn't.

Gold takes 10 stays or 25 nights. Platinum takes 25 stays or 50 nights. If you're going to stay 50 nights then you'll make platinum for one person. But if you break that into 50 one-night stays (and alternate the name on the room each night), you'll end up with 50 stays and both people will make platinum. It's even better for gold since it would only take 20 one-night stays to get 2 people gold status.

Excuse me, I forgot that this is FT and even though this is a three-month promo I should have known someone would take it to the extreme.

Is it possible to make a cash reservation for a standard room and have it replaced with certificates once they are earned? The purpose would be to ensure a reservation at a high-demand resort until the certs are in my account.

Officially, I think it can only happen if an award room is available at time of booking with the certificate. In reality, the hotel could work the magic to cancel your existing room and put it back into award inventory so that it could be rebooked that way. But they don't have to do so. It would be up to the hotel to approve -- not up to the will of an SPG agent. YMMV.

This is what I'm doing - holding on to a AAA reservation for the room I want. If the FRN doesn't work out for the resort I want in Europe, I guess we could do a weekend in Disney World or Napa. Or drive over to the Poconos. Or take another trip to Europe. Oh dear, don't get me started.

Some people tried to do this last year by booking an award on points and switching to a FWN award. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I'd say booking a revenue room and switching would have even less of a chance. It may help, but it may also hurt (by lowering overall inventory, the hotel would have less incentive to open award inventory).

If the associate is following approved policy, a new award reservation would have to be made and the old paid reservation cancelled. Associates are not permitted to simply change a paid-rate reservation over to an award reservation. Obviously, some mistakes have been made in the past. Whether that trend will continue, no one can say for sure.

William,
If one makes the reservation using SPG award points could one then seamlessly exchange this promotion's certificates for the points?

In the past, that has not been standard practice. As I said above, sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I doubt it's changed.
