Frequently Asked Questions about Rapid Rewards Visa

1. What are the different card types?
non-business Plus, non-business Premier, business Plus, and business Premier.
Premier cards have a higher annual fee but give 6000 anniversary bonus points vs. 3000 points for the Plus cards. It is generally agreed that you will get the bonus for a new account if you have not had that particular type of RR Visa card before, but Chase appears to be in the process of changing their policies (see below).

Note that prior to RR-2.0, the two types of RR Visa cards were "Classic" ($29 to $39 annual fee) and "Signature" ($59 to $69 annual fee). Plus and Premier are new products for purposes of the (soon to be retired?) "One bonus per product" rule.

2. Is there a zero annual fee version?
No.

3. Can I "churn" these cards? How often can I reapply for the same type card and get the signup bonus?
The official rule has recently changed more than once. Closely check the T&C of your offer as different rules may apply to concurrently available offers. The Inflight offer linked above states:
This bonus offer is available to you as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus for this product in the past twenty four months.
Referral offers have been seen with a limit of one individual and one business bonus per lifetime (although T&C read by the CSR taking the application differed from those printed on the referral offer).

Actual results sometimes differ from the official rule. People have reported receiving the bonus a second time on the same card type at various intervals even when the bonus was officially once per lifefime per product. Please post your results here.

As of mid-May 2015 Chase has cracked down on applicants who appear to have much less than average attachment to their cards. Specifically, more than 5 applications within the past 24 months is the approximate cutoff: Chase crackdown on churners: Please report your RR Visa approvals/denials here

4. Can I cancel the card and still collect the anniversary bonus?
Yes. Reasonable people disagree on whether this crosses the line of exploiting the card issuer. The anniversary bonus is described a reward for having been a cardmember for the past year, not as a reward for paying the next year's annual fee. Based on that description, the bonus has been earned even if you then cancel the card. As a practical matter, there is a window of only a couple weeks to accomplish this. The bonus points will post on the billing date of the statement containing your new annual fee, which will have posted earlier in the billing cycle. You have 30 days from posting of the annual fee to cancel the card and have the new fee refunded.

5. Does the annual fee count toward the spending threshold for the signup bonus?
No.

6. When will my signup bonus post to my Rapid Rewards account?
If you have met the spending threshold at least several days before your statement date, the bonus will normally post 2 days after your statement date, not when you actually spent the money! Cutting the timing or the spending amount too closely is not advisable. Mistakes can happen.

7. My statement shows sufficient purchases to meet the spending threshold. Why didn't I receive the bonus?
This can happen if you met the spending threshold just a few days before the statement date. It appears that accounts are flagged for meeting the spending threshold independently of the statement generation process and less frequently than daily.

8. How can I determine my statement date?
You should call Chase (phone number on back of card) to check your next statement date. Credit card companies are now required to have payments due on the same numerical day of each month, which means closing dates vary throughout the year. (Before reforms enacted after the financial crisis, RR Visa cards had constant closing dates rather than constant due dates.) The closing date should remain within the same small range unless you request a change of your payment due date. When you request a change, Chase normally can delay your next statement but cannot accelerate it. If you are unwisely taking the risk of cutting your timing too close, you should call Chase more than once to confirm your next statement date.

9. I accidentally crossed the spending threshold in December rather than January. Can I return a large purchase to bring my spending back below the threshold?
Unlikely. It appears that the sweep to check spending threshold does not un-flag an account previously flagged as meeting the threshold. It's not even clear whether the sweep counts returns at all. If you realize the error before the statement closes and you have a payment due date change available, you might be able to push the December closing date into January.

10. Can I apply for a credit card in my wife's name but my Rapid Rewards number, so that the points funnel into my account?
People have tried this. Some have succeeded. Others have reported that Chase closed the account and posted no Rapid Rewards points. Do you feel lucky? Programs can become very aggressive when they suspect members of defrauding the program by using non-matching names. When you game the system you are only on solid ground if you follow the rules to the letter. Breaking the rules means that the program can penalize you if they want to, and believe me: They want to.

11. Can I scam this system in any other way? I just had a clever idea.
There is nothing new under the sun here on FlyerTalk. If it relates to established program rules and it isn't discussed here you can be confident your idea will not work.

I tend to agree with this. We waited, and the signup bonus on one card had dropped 10,000 points, but that was okay. We hit companion pass on the Feb bill cycle and have for the rest of 2018 and all of 2019. We paid some recurring bills in advance to get the spend in time.

The new restricted card policy is preventing me from my normal companion pass plans. I already have a SW business card tied to a legit side business (opened in October 2017), but signing up for a second one is now the only realistic option I have in order to get the necessary points for a companion pass. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a second of the same business card under the same SSN? If so, can I get a 2nd bonus even though I got one for the other side business 7 months ago?

Thanks!

Did the points from your 2017 card post in 2017 or 2018 ? My wife opened a card in 10/2017 but we planned for the points to post in 2018

I have never heard of a person having 2 Southwest business cards

The original business card's bonus posted in December 2017 because I'm an idiot. I have one of the personal cards open and that bonus hit appropriately in January 2018, but now I can't apply for another. I also can't wait until next year, because still won't be eligible for another personal card. Hence, it's another business card or bust.

Anyone else have any experience getting a 2nd SW business card?

Thanks!

Possible solution.

Start over, but with wife getting business card and personal card - both in HER name.

Since you had those points post in 2017 and didn't apply for the personal cards early in 2018 I'm guessing you already have CP for 2018 ? If so use the above advice and have your wife/GF etc get CP for 2019/2020

My wife can't sign up for the personal card until next year (5/24, and her most recent SW Premier card bonus was in 10/16), and we have a bunch of trips remaining this year, so we'd like to try and get the CP now, if possible. So really the question is simply can I get a second Southwest business card and it's corresponding bonus for a second small business tied to the same SSN as the first business card.

I think it is worth a try.

The best answer you will get is give it a shot and see, let us know. GL

Another idea is to hit the Citi forum and get in on the AA mailer churn @ ~ 70K miles a card. I have over a million AA miles now from the churn and I don't even fly AA.

For the members here who had to move credit around to get approved for a BUSINESS card did Chase contact you by mail or did they call and how long did it take for them to contact you ?

My wife applied for her first ever business card ( INK) about 2 months ago, application went pending but was approved about two days later without any interaction with Chase.

They gave her a very high credit line on the INK which we decided to leave unchanged since it was her only business card.

She applied for the SW Business today and it also went pending but I have a feeling she is going to have to move some credit around to get approved so I was just looking for some data points from people here who had the same situation. Thanks

EDIT, card showed up in her account tonight without any contact with Chase. $5K CL ( which I believe is the minimum) so she just squeaked in. Her next business card will be a United in about 3 months and I would be surprised if the 3rd card gets approved without shifting credit but so far she is 2 for 2

I thought there might be a little consumer advocacy here but I guess I was wrong.
I signed up for the rapid rewards credit card through an email link I received on 1/12/15. I was to receive 50,000 rapid rewards points if I spent $2,000 in the first 3 months of having the card. I am close to $2,000, so I logged on to my account to see how much more I need to spend to get there. Then I noticed I was awarded 25,000 rapid rewards points on 3/4/15 for reaching $1,000 spent. That didn't make sense to me. I shouldn't have been rewarded any points yet, because I haven't reached $2,000 quite yet. None of the materials or offers I received ever said anything about 25,000 points for $1,000. I did a little googling and found that the 25,000 points for $1,000 is the offer they are currently running. I called customer service and they basically called me a liar and told me I signed up for the 25,000 point offer. I really wish I would have taken screen shots from when I signed up. I still have the email I signed up through showing the offer was for 50,000 points. Also, conveniently the materials they send with your card say nothing about the 25,000 or 50,000 rewards points. None of your online account information documents your sign-up offer either. I have never even received mail or email with the 25,000 point offer, only the 50,000. So, basically I am just told that it's tough luck. I am so pissed. I have been a loyal Chase customer for over 10 years. I have been a loyal Southwest customer for the past few years. I have a very bad taste in my mouth after this. I plan on switching banks as soon as I get a chance and will also cancel the credit card. Will do everything I can to avoid flying Southwest in the future too. It's sad that companies still use sleazy tactics like bait and switch.

This is a bait and switch scam Chase has been doing for quite a while. I've been caught up with a similar situation for quite a while with Chase and have even gotten the media involved. NBC Chicago is interested in running a story on this and is looking for others who have been victims to speak out. Email me for the details or reach out to NBC Chicago directly and share your experience. I realize this was quite a while ago but I'd still like for you to share your experience to stop future people from getting scammed

1. 2015 was 3 years ago

2. I have never seen a 25K Southwest offer, lowest I have ever seen is 40k

3. I have never had a problem with any Chase signup bonus and myself, my dad and my wife have received dozens over the years

There was a 25,000 point offer about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. It was short lived. Maybe lasted a couple of months.

Now I sort of remember this guy posting the same thing a while back. Obviously he never cleared his browser after glancing over the 25K offer

I'm sure NBC is all over this, lol

I understand this was several years ago but it's worth a try to see if the poster sees this and reaches out to share their story. The same incident happened to me but it was supposed to be 50K points and they only gave me 10k. After a long battle with Chase telling me I was wrong and that the offer I signed up for was the 10K I began to do research. On Southwests actual website there are numerous people complaing about the exact same thing happening. I've since then screen shot all these comments and emailed them to the media. Thanks to NBC and Fox Chicago stations for helping contact Chase on my part and finally getting them to agree to the 50K points but it never should have taken that much of an effort to get what I originally signed up for. So I just ask that anyone else who has also become a victim of this scam steps forward to tell their story.
