discussion, current and future deliveries, 1st delivery video link
American Airlines has ordered 16 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Deliveries were delayed by aircraft design and assembly issues, but began to be delivered in 2015. 16 788s are on order (plus 26 787-9s and options for more). Seating configuration is 28 Business Class, 48 Main Cabin Extra and 150 Main Cabin. Typical range would be JFK and HKG or JNB.
With a typical capacity of 242 passengers and a range of 7,355 nautical miles (13,621 km), the -8 is the base model of the 787 family and was the first to enter service in 2011.[257] With a length of 186 feet (57 m) and a wingspan of 197 feet (60 m), it is the third Boeing widebody after the 747SP and the 777-200LR wider than its length. The 787-8 is targeted to replace the Boeing 767-200ER and -300ER, as well as expand into new non-stop markets where larger planes would not be economically viable. Link to full Wikipedia article

The Puget Sound Boeing Test Flight board is reporting that N801AC will be going off to Charleston today. Others have reported that space is tight in Seattle because of the backlog of 787s that are out of the factory but have not been delivered.
Back to the 787-8, ZA818 American Airlines 787-8 N801AC made its 2nd B2 - 2nd Boeing test flight - on Tuesday. After a couple of customer flights the second AA 787 will be on it's way to DFW.

With great respect, I personally think you are overstating each and every point here-- greatly. Again, with respect and all, but, I don't see this AA 787 with it's new seats as ANY kind of "great game-changer" in any way, shape or form.
And since quite obviously one of these two inaugural 787 routes is to Asia, AA is still far inferior to almost every single one of it's Asian-flagged competitors (albeit, yes, with connection involved.)
Let's not get carried away, IMHO.

I would expect service to the South Pacific well before the middle east.

I've heard rumors of LAX-AKL. The 787-8 would be the right aircraft to start this. I don't think it will require any to change to the Qantas JBV. I think American metal flying to Australia will happen eventually, once they change the rules of the JBV and start receiving A350s.

Why the hell did AA ever pull out of India?! I would believe that to be a fairly busy route. Never seen a flight ex-DEL that was less than sold-out.

Trash yields. Air India dumped the prices. Combined with ME 3 flying, American won't be returning to India even with the planned configuration of the 787-9, which would be favourable for such a flight.

There are several caveats - AA's Indian partner is Jet - once BOM has its state of the art integrated Intl and Domestic terminal up and running (currently only Intl is operational) it would be significantly easier for AA to offer one stop connections to almost all of India with favorable timings since Jet has a pretty strong network ex BOM.
Most importantly - India was downgraded to Cat 2 by the FAA - so at the moment US carriers can neither start new service nor put new codeshares on other carriers service to India.
I would look for AA to restart DEL and start BOM in maybe a couple of years down the road, assuming of course that FAA upgrades them back to Cat 1.

AA were flying a high premium configured 777 with 16 F seats ... as Longboater remarked the yields (with or without AI) are pretty much on the low side. AA will probably restart service to DEL/BOM in the future with the 787-8/9 since the configuration (esp of the -9) offers a perfect setup for the Indian market - low number of J and high Y.

pics of new AA 787s @Boeing's Paine Field
Sorry for the delay -- not a tease! I had to rush off to another event before I could get the photo links to work!

here's N803AN that was not flying that day, but is parked right next to the Customer Acceptance facility at Paine Field.

I took these photos and video when attending Aviation Geek Fest 2015. I was very lucky to get a full ticket, as they all sold out in literally 30 seconds!
