SAS Bid Upgrade Process

Hi,

I'm new to flying SAS and wasn't aware of the upgrade process when I initially booked a trip from the US to CPH in the Premium Economy cabin. I figured I could just upgrade to business later, not realizing it was the bidding system. My question is probably stupid, but on the bid process is the bid I enter the bid I end up paying if accepted, or is the bid I enter the top bid I'd pay and I'd only end up paying up to the point where I outbid the next highest bidder? In other words, if a "strong" bid is $600 euro, and I bid $900 just to make sure I have the best chance of getting the upgrade, do I automatically end up paying $900, or if the bid settles at $710 (for example), do I just pay that? Thanks for abiding my ignorance. David

Not ignorant questions at all. You will pay the price you bid, regardless of other bids. So if your upgrade bid is $900, that is what you'll pay if successful.

Unless the upgrade price is not important to you, you should not add 50% to your bid just to be sure that it will be accepted It will lead to significantly overbidding.

You will of course pay the bid amount if the bid is successful (i.e. regardless of what other bidders pay).

Interpreting a high minimum upgrade bid

Hi all,
I'm travelling to CPH-BOS in a few days and can see that the minimum cash upgrade bid from PE to Business is relatively high (4680 DKK). How should one interpret this? Does it mean there's very few, if any, seats available in Business and/or many have already bid to drive up the price, or SAS just think they've a good chance of getting this level of bid for the upgrade? In contrast, the BOS-CPH flight is having a minimum bid of 1760 DKK. Interestingly, there's also a discrepancy between the difference between the two flights in DKK and the minimum points bid (29.000 versus 22.000). So, the difference is 2.6x if paying in DKK but only 1.6x if paying in points.... Is this typical?
Thanks so much

For CPH-BOS it is relatively high amount. It is a day flight so for me PE will suffice and I would never pay 4700 DK to upgrade this leg.

DKK 1760 for BOS-CPH is very good value.

Spot on, second that!

And yes, the minimum pricing is based on several factors including the cabin load. A high minimum price almost always correlates with a full cabin in my experience.

this is my first time flying SAS and i bought SAS go light. i just bid for the upgrade to business at $580 and won (EWR-CPH). feeling a bit upset with myself for splurging, but it sounds like a good price?

On an overnight flight and on a Go Light ticket, it seems like a good deal compared with the cheapest equivalent cash fare for Business.

Enjoy your flight!

So a few weeks ago minimum bid dropped from USD790 to USD240 on my IAD-CPH. I bid on my flight (340 as we really want the upgrade but not enough to bid higher).

Last week I noticed that when I try to book those flights on the SK site and app on the select flight SK says Business says 1 left, Plus says 2 left and Go says 2 left. (I have been doing that for weeks just to look at seat maps (which I know does not equate to booked seats)) - it just seemed to drop so fast as if there was a change of equipment to the A321 (which there has not...)

So it looks like we will enjoy our Plus seats on a crowded plane!

Thank you! Now, I'm wondering if they'll even consider my bid of $325 if they have raised the min to $500.

what was the outcome for you?

Im flying OSL-EWR on Apr 12th at 11.10 am and the minimum bid for Economy -> Business stands at EUR 960. It is a day flight and I am willing to shell out quite some money, but this seems steep. Does anyone know if there's a chance of it dropping closer to the flight time or if counter upgrades are sold for less? Or does this indicate they are sure to fill up business class and I'll be stuck with Economy?

Are you flying on a different date? That flight is already in the air

Hello All,

This is my first time posting here. My GF and I are flying SAS from BOS to CPH on Wednesday April 17th. The current minimum bid to upgrade from Economy to Business is 380 USD. Would it be more advantageous and wait to place a bid in a few days or is that irrelevant as long as the minimum bid doesn't skyrocket? If I have no status with SAS or Star Alliance, should I put in a higher starting bid, say 500 USD, to increase our chances of an upgrade? Premium Economy upgrade is 140 USD. TIA

Welcome to FlyerTalk, mtuze :)

It looks like there are a lot of open seats on that flight still for sale. It doesn't hurt to toss in a bid now. You can always adjust your bid if you notice the minimum bid has gone up. I currently have a bid in for a Monday flight where the minimum bid has gone up and I'm currently under that number. I'm not sure if that puts me out of contention, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed since inventory still looks open. Of course putting in a higher bid will increase your chances - just up to you if you're willing to splurge for that. I typically bid around $300 on my flights NYC to/from CPH, and that's when I'm already in SAS Plus (premium economy, as you mentioned), so both prices seem to me a great deal, especially coming from economy.

Oh yes, I meant Apr 12th.
Expert flyer shows 6 seats left in Business. Eco and Eco Plus are wide open. Minimum bid is still at EUR 960. I'll try the airport tomorrow.
