Just got confirmed for my ORD to CPH upgrade and wanted to share my experience:
  • Two weeks ago SAS wanted 10,500kr for the upgrade.
  • 10 days ago the price dropped to 4,500kr so I placed a bid
  • Six days ago the price went back to 10,500kr. I kept my original bid.
  • SAS did sell more seats, but they blocked off a high number as well
  • Got my win notification right at the six hours before departure mark
I am very happy to have gotten the upgrade. The seat is awesome, but the real MVP will be the Polaris Lounge instead of the SAS Lounge 🙃

I thought lounge access stayed the same - SK lounge only. So since I am leaving IAD and there is no lounge access for Plus (no SK lounge - they use the LH lounge (I think) and pretty sure Plus does not get access at IAD. So I will be able to use the Polaris lounge at IAD if I get the upgrade? Might motivate me to bid a little higher (right now it is at 790USD and that is just a bit too high. right now thinking about 550-600USD is where I would take the plunge)

Lounge access is according to the upgraded class.

Hello,

I would like to ask. I have a ticket from CPH to LAX in booking class P. I would like to try a bid upgrade to business class. What class will I then receive? I'm concerned because from P class there are good miles for A3, and I don't want to end up with zero after the upgrade (like at LH :-D ).

It used to be that your booking class was upgraded but since a couple of years this is no longer the case - hence you ought to receive miles per P when crediting to A3.

AFAIK, the only thing that matters is how you pay for the upgrade if you win the bid.

If you pay for an upgrade using points, you get no additional EB points.

If you pay with credit card, then you get a fixed number of points, you can see yourself the number of additional EB basic points you'll get (on top of the points you would have gotten with your ticket) at: https://www.flysas.com/en/eurobonus/...vian-airlines/

With the approach that SAS uses, your ticket class doesn't change.

Unless something has changed recently, you need to be a Eurobonus member to get any additional points for a bid.

Nothing has changed abd you are correct. I assumed they were using LH and A3 as examples.

Thanks for your insight all. Helpful in gaining some sort of insight on the patterns behind a successful bid.

I wanted to ask for your expertise about upgrading to J or Y+ at the airport. What have you previously found to be the best location (check-in counter, gate, etc.) and point in time to seek an upgrade? Have you found agents to be generally receptive?

I would imagine check-in counter is best. Once agents move to the gate they have a lot of work to do and are less likely to be willing to entertain a speculative query about paying for an upgrade.

Two of us traveling IAD-CPH in late April in Plus class. Minimum bid for Plus to Business dropped from $790 to $300. When I put in $350 it says "weak bid". Looks like $360 is "medium bid" and $510 is where "strong bid" starts.

I was thinking of putting in a little higher than my initial thought of $350. Maybe $375....

Thoughts? Or any ideas on strategy?

thanks.

Flying CPH to EWR a350 Premium on Saturday 24 feb. return with a330 on 27 feb.

Min. bid for outbound was 22.000 - I bid 24.400 3 weeks ago showing 70% empty seats in J
Min. bid for inbound was 36.000 4 weeks ago, 1 week later it dropped to 22.000 - also bid 24.400 also 70% empty seats in J

inbound today 24 of 40 "occupied", 2 open as Paid & Upgrade and 14 blocked.
outbound around 70% still open

Are you confusing your "outbound" and "inbound"? Otherwise I can't get your comment to make sense

Personally, I don't think there is any other primary strategy than to bid whatever you think the seats are worth to you.

I think what you bid probably also gets influenced a bit by status. As EB Gold and Diamond members get their bids up-weighted (I forget the number for EB Gold but for Diamond its 30%), you'll need to consider that in your bid amount. That said, I know more than a few regular EB status holders who bid in the low-to-medium range and win on certain flights.

In my opinion, then the only thing to consider is when you are travelling. If you're travelling around holidays or your departing on popular days of the week, expect there to be more competition for fewer seats.

I don't think there is any winning formula. Just keep a watch on the seat inventory, be mindful of the seating tricks that SAS plays (e.g. blocking off seats in near empty cabins to seemingly drive up big price/demand), and spend whatever you think the seat is worth.

Anyone with any insight on how the upgrades work.... (assume status is the same for all psgrs)
  • Someone in Plus bids $400, someone in economy bids $500 both for business (can economy skip Plus?) - is the higher cash price bid taken or is does the fact that psgr#1 was already in Plus put them ahead of the economy psgr?
  • Two people in Plus.... one bids $400, paid $500 for their ticket. second person bids $350 and paid $700 for their ticket. Does what you paid for your original ticket matter?

Just wondering how bids work in relation to other things (besides status)
