I didn't have my reading glasses with me, so I was not able at the time to determine if it was roughly comparable to TaxCut, etc., but given the brand and the placement in the store, I assume it is.

That is weird. I bought "H&R Block At Home" and it says that it was "formerly Tax Cut." I didn't think H&R Block would market both of them. Maybe they started with Tax Cut late last year then switched the name but some of the old boxes are still in circulation?

The IRS offers the form and expects that you complete it and include it in your filed return, the programs include all the IRS forms and let you fill them out. The higher the version of the program, the more forms are included in their interview/wizard/help/etc.

Note that the IRS does not know or care about the program you use. They expect that you follow their directions and rules and submit the correct form. The "guarantees" that the programs offer cover program errors, not user errors. If they get the math wrong (not very likely), then they'll make you whole. If you don't submit a form that didn't come up in their "interview," you're SOL.

Thanks to everyone for the detailed explanations. We may just use a CPA for this year's taxes. We don't need to file state taxes (I did last year when I moved from PA).

Bank Of America discount

I was doing some checking to see if there are any discounts and found Bank of America is offering 35% TurboTax for anyone.

Mrs bj2757 purchased the Deluxe version at the AAFES on base - paid $59 for it (with state we don't need). I was going to have her return it but I was ready to get started so I figured what the heck - there was a $10 rebate I could send in. Guess what - paying $59 at AAFES doesn't qualify for the rebate. Just another military benefit.

Ebay and Bing

If you go to BING.COM today and search for "block taxcut tax software" and ook at the sponsored sites for EBAY.COM. Then click through to Ebay and loo at "buy it now" items. If you have a cashback account you get 10% off. I see H&R Block 2009 Deluxe Federal+ State+ eFile NEW Taxcut and free shipping. Then 10% off. You may also get Ebay bucks. You must use BUY IT NOW and not bid on an auction.

No, You're correct - H&R Block is what was once TaxCut. I misremembered the store display as TaxCut when it was actually TurboTax.

Cheapest prices for TurboTax are usually at amazon and ebay.

Note that most retail places insist that once you open the box, you are not supposed to be able to return any software. You should get the $24.95 TurboTax Basic if it's not too late or get it via the BOA link above for $19.45.

The TurboTax Deluxe retail version only is ineligible for rebate if you bought it at Target, Costco, Sams or WalMart. Staples has a different rebate form. AAFES is offering $30 rebates for a Quicken + TurboTax combo, so I think you may still be able to get a rebate for TurboTax alone. Ask the PX or BX where you bought it or go to https://www.intuitrebates.com/promoc...tuit/help.html and ask Intuit online.

If all else fails and you really want the rebate, make sure the rebate form says it will accept a copy of the receipt (as H&R Block Home does), buy a fresh copy of the software at a place eligible for the rebate (Office Depot, Office Max, etc). and return the unopened software for a refund the next day. You submit a copy of the receipt with your original UPC from your AAFES box. This is a lot of work for $10, but you overpaid by $35~$40 by getting the state version you don't need, so it takes some of the sting out.

Just thought I'd add this heads up for H&R Block At Home - although you get free Federal e-files, the H&R Block fee for a state tax e-file was $19.95!

My home state of Virginia has offered FREE e-filing on its own site for the last few years. I plugged in a few numbers from my Federal return, e-filed, and the refund showed up in the bank account 3 days later.

Just to be clear about the Virginia program.... You can use the IRS e-file service through a tax program to file federal and state returns simultaneously. Virginia also has an iFile program for free, online filing of the state return. See: http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm...FileTaxReturns

If you don't mind filling in rebates you may be able to get the software for free. The key is to buy free after rebate software and use a store coupon. I've done this successfully for many years at Staples where they offered free after rebate software with the purchase of tax software. This year Staples does not have the free after rebate software with tax software purchase, but Office Depot does. Office Depot discount coupons are not valid for software, but I've heard that they will honor competitor coupons which do not have such restrictions.

For certain versions of Taxcut purchased at select retailers (not all retailers qualify) there also is a $10 rebate:

Saw this thread and wanted to bump a reminder for StateFarm customers that they are still offering free online Turbotax for the first 25k clients, and 25% off thereafter. Did mine last week but the freebies are still available.
