For the free state efile if you live in one of the covered states.

For some people, the answer may be unfamiliarity. I.e., a lot of us have used TurboTax and/or TaxCut in the past and might be reluctant to change to something different.

Also, TT and TC will import your data from the prior year's return (basic data; it doesn't actually duplicate the entire return! ). Will TaxAct do that? (I realize I could find this out myself, but.... ;) )

The free version of Tax Act does not import info. I can see where that might be worth soemthing. I think I'm a cheapskate though. :D

This link is from Chase Bank....it is good for 30% off Turbo Tax online. It says you have to use your Chase Check Card.

http://turbotax.intuit.com/microsite...requestid=1732

Does not apply to state returns: "Save 30% on TurboTax Online Federal products. Discount does not apply to TurboTax Online State products."

If you, like me, do not have or want SF insurance, you can get the SF visa card (issued by state farm bank).

SFB visa has only a 1% foreign exchange travel fee (they pass visa's fee onto you).

I mainly keep this credit card for the free tax software.

Thanks for this reminder. I could not remember how I filed for free last year until I saw this posting!

For what it's worth, I mailed my Federal return on 2/1 and received the refund today by direct deposit. I'm just as happy saving the $20 bucks for eFile for a week or two at most delay. (I don't qualify for the free eFile.)

Looks like the $9.95 version of TaxAct (TaxACT Online Deluxe) will import data but only from previous versions of TaxAct.

Microsoft Money Plus 2008 $40.00
Norton Antivirus 2008 $39.99
Paper clips $0.69 (to bring total >= $100)
Total: $100.67
-$20 off $100 coupon for Staples ($2.98 on Ebay) or sometimes free on slickdeals/fatwallet
Tax: $6.66
Total: $87.33

Then there are the following rebates:
$40 rebate for MSMoney + TaxCut
$20 rebate for upgrading NAV (previous antivirus CD required, I had NAV 2005)
$20 rebate for NAV+TaxCut

So total outlay = $7.33 + $2.98 + 3 stamps = ~$11.50 for all three

Plus I ordered via shopping portal (skymilesshoping) and got miles (ok, only ~54. :) but goes towards the 25k partner bonus)

Yay, got my $40 Microsoft rebate already, now just to wait on the others.

With the heavy price hikes from last year on the tax software, I think I may just use a local CPA who can maximize my deductions. I'll still keep an eye on this thread.

The difference in cost in tax software shouldn't really drive this decision.

I've never found an accountant who would do (a) a better job than me + software while (b) charging less than several orders of magnitude more than the software.

I won't let a $250 tax preparer touch my taxes. And my tax situation isn't complicated enough to warrant several thousand dollars.

fwiw, Turbo Tax Deluxe Fed & State for $29.95 which is about the cheapest price I've seen this season,

Plus the price you paid for the previous years' tax preparation software (or CPA fees) is deductible, right?

You can also open a 90 day CD with state farm bank.. min deposit is $500 with interest of 2.8%. Difference between that and my regular money market bond fund is basically 2%, which gives me a lost opportunity cost of <$3.

Not bad for free TT deluxe (online or download). State farm's online version provides free state and fed e-filing, the download version does not.

Turbo Tax for tax year 2009

In my email is a discount offer from Turbo Tax themselves - but state is priced extra. Deluxe + state with discount - $42.80, I assume to download. I think I paid $50 last year for a CD at Staples.
