I got one of these in the mail - the CD in a box!! Don't think I will be using it as I have been a user of turbotax on the web for some years and get a discount through fidelity or numerous others.

My copy of Turbotax may be appearing on CC ;)

I have used Turbotax Online for some years - not slow at all, data avialble online for quite a while, and it also produces a PDF for you for your record. So what else does one need?

it's never been slow for me.. unless you have a slow internet connection. ;)
also, I believe the online version lets you save a copy of your return with all supporting schedules.

Thank you for this information.

Do you have a web page to learn more about the Fidelity offer? I checked there, and the only information that I could find referred me to a TurboTax page for Fidelity (see below), but none of the offerings are free.

Thank you for the information. Do you have a link regarding the Fidelity offer? The Fidelity website links to co-branded Intuit page, but none of the offers there are free.

Anyone know if TaxAct will read my previous year's file created by either TurboTax or TaxCut (don't recall which)?

When did you get yours?

I got two different Costco mailers recently:

One is a coupon mailer full of coupons all good for the same dates, from Jan 7th to the end of Jan (not sure if it's Jan 27 or Feb 3, something like that). This does not have a TurboTax coupon in it.

The other is one of those "Wallet" coupon books, with coupons that are good for different specific periods ranging from a couple weeks in January to a couple weeks in March and some online only coupons. This booklet has the $15 off TurboTax coupon in it.

I also got a TurboTax CD in the mail. Apparently they are doing something similar to what AOL used to do, mail out a CD that you can install, then you can buy a license for it after installing.

I received a full version of Tax Cut Basic on CD in the mail recently. Not sure why I received it but I have been using Tax Cut for a few years so maybe they just sent it. I would have to pay for fed e-file and for the state programs but I don't mind filing a paper return and the MN state return is easy enough that I don't need a computer program to do it.

I got a $20 off $100 certificate in my email from Staples. I got:
MONEY PLUS DELUXE 2008 Price: $39.99
WINDOWS LIVE ONECARE 2 Price: $39.99
TAXCUT PREMIUM FED Price: $19.99
TAPE DISPENSER CORE-CLEAR Price: $.28

Subtotal: $100.25
Delivery: FREE
Coupon: -$20.00
Tax: $4.01
Total: $84.26

I will get $80 in rebates and about 1000 airline miles (credit card + portal miles + portal bonus)

Be aware, however, that the $19.99 price for TaxCut Premium Federal does NOT include Federal e-file; nor does it include state tax returns, nor e-file for state. Everything is extra!

How do you get this "free" version?

The only thing I can find on the Fidelity website is this:

Do Your Taxes With TurboTax® and Receive a Discount

Save 25% on TurboTax® products for federal and state tax returns. Payment is not required until you print or file your return.

EDITED TO ADD: I think you misinterpreted something. Fidelity's website offers a "Try for Free" option on various versions of the TurboTax software. That is NOT the same as the software being free.

The actual prices charged on the Fidelity website are as follows:

Basic $11.20 Federal

Deluxe $22.45 Federal

Premier $37.45 Federal

Home & Business $56.20 Federal

Free e-file is included with all the above.

The additional charge for state returns is $22.45 (any version).

In other words, not free.

In all probability, it's not free. To use the software to even print a Federal return, you will need to pay a fee.

I've received unsolicited TaxCut CD's by mail in the past and this is how it works. (Read the material on the CD box and you'll see.)

www.Turbotax.com has a free simple (they say 1040EZ and simple returns) with a free e-file included on their website for federal, add a state and it's up to $25 per state. It's an online version.

It won't be available until tomorrow.

Not sure why you need software if you do the EZ form, but it's got a free e-file :)

Kathy, I've used TaxCut for several years now (but was thinking about switching back to TurboTax, thus my question above about the "free" Fidelity version of the latter). The last two years TaxCut has mailed me the basic edition CD in the mail for some reason. It's fully functional (you can print and save), but it costs extra to use it to e-file.

FYI
The Vanguard website shows the following for TurboTax online. All have free e-file; state additional:

Basic $9.70 Federal

Deluxe $13.45 Federal

Premier $32.45 Federal

Home and Business $48.70 Federal

Can't import other types of returns into TaxAct unfortunately. One reason I continue to use TaxAct is that my return remains pretty simple and they automatically import numbers from last year's return which makes filing easier each year. Plus they're consistently cheaper than TurboTax or TaxCut.
