If anyone's still watching:
Email this morning from Barnes & Noble's CEO:
Dear Borders Customer,
My name is William Lynch, CEO of Barnes & Noble, and I'm writing to you today on
behalf of the entire B&N team to make you aware of important information regarding your Borders account.
First of all let me say Barnes & Noble uniquely appreciates the importance bookstores play within local communities, and we're very sorry your Borders store closed.
As part of Borders ceasing operations, we acquired some of its assets including Borders brand trademarks and their customer list. The subject matter of your DVD and other video purchases will be part of the transferred information. The federal bankruptcy court approved this sale on September 26, 2011.
Our intent in buying the Borders customer list is simply to try and earn your business. The majority of our stores are within close proximity to former Borders store locations, and for those that aren't, we offer our award- winning NOOK digital reading devices that provide a bookstore in your pocket. We are readers like you, and hope that through our stores, NOOK devices, and our bn.com online bookstore we can win your trust and provide you with a place to read and shop.
It's important for you to understand however you have the absolute right to opt-out of having your customer data transferred to Barnes & Noble. If you would like to opt-out, we will ensure all your data we receive from Borders is disposed of in a secure and confidential manner. Please visit www.bn.com/borders before October 15, 2011 to do so.
Should you choose not to opt-out by October 15, 2011, be assured your information will be covered under the Barnes & Noble privacy policy, which can be accessed at www.bn.com/privacy. B&N will maintain any of your data according to this policy and our strict privacy standards.
At Barnes & Noble we share your love of books whatever shape they take. We also take our responsibility to service communities by providing a local bookstore very seriously. In the coming weeks, assuming you don't opt-out, you'll be hearing from us with some offers to encourage you to shop our stores and try our NOOK products. We hope you'll give us a chance to be your bookstore.
Respectfully, William Lynch - Barnes & Noble | Borders

B&N thinks they are seizing an opportunity; I think they are seizing a small one when they could have a bigger one. If B&N wants to bring former Border's regulars into the B&N fold, then why not offer something to encourage them to make a B&N purchase within the next 60 days? I think a 25% on one book printable coupon to entice Border's customers would have been a smart move. The email Mr. Lynch said does little.

Something like that seems so obvious as to be a no-brainer. So what is B&N's thinking, they never considered doing something to entice Border's customers to become B&N ones, that is other than sending this e-mail advising that they have bought Border's customer list? Do they figure that if people were going into Border's stores, they will now come to B&N ones and no encouragement to increase the likelihood of them doing that is needed? They could, of course, do something along these lines at any time if they so choose, but the more time that goes by, the less of an effect such an outreach to Border's customers is likely to have.

All the above. And interesting that they're picking at as carrion what they wouldn't bite on while Borders lived. But I guess we were no different if/as we went in for the deeper and deeper discounts. Alas, the way of life and death in this world.
BTW, talking with a friend who already wrote back to Mr. Lynch to tell him she was opting out, I said that, although I already have a B&N (gifted) membership, I'll hang in to see how this further plays out -- I've got more time to delete emails. (To digress a little further, I got faaar more Borders emails at the free level, and I think better discounts, than I ever do from B&N.)

Interestingly, Boston's news radio station, WBZ, just reported that the Massachusetts Attorney General today issued a "warning" that former Borders customers who receive an email from Barnes&Noble need to notify Barnes&Noble by October 15 if they want to opt out of having their Borders personal information go to Barnes&Noble.
Makes one wonder especially why the AG's office's is interested. Of course, we know the essence of the story already, but I wonder if the AG is interested because of the terms that we need to opt out rather than opt in. Maybe that makes a big difference, since we didn't volitionally ask for this. Seems to be an incomplete report.
Perhaps others are hearing this and more?

Dear Borders Customer,
As a reminder, on September 30, 2011 Barnes & Noble acquired the Borders customer list. The transferred personally identifiable information in the customer list includes customer e-mail addresses and purchase history. No credit card data was transferred. If you would like to opt out of having your customer data transferred, please go to www.bn.com/borders by November 2, 2011

And to itsme's and kipper's points, if Barnes & Noble were ever to make something of it - along the lines of Borders's frequent teasers - it would be a major ramping up from B&N's current m.o. I don't get zip from them at the paid membership level. My last notice was a couple of weeks ago for a bogo at the coffee shop, and I can't remember the one before it.

And to JudyJFLA's point, I'd be tempted to send the gift card in to Mr. Lynch, and ask, "Respectfully, since you got Borders's list and their logo, and you continue to send me emails....." Maybe not now, but wait to see if they ever do start to make something of it. It would be worth the price of a stamp or even priority mail.
Nevvver mind.
