I would say your chances are equal. It doesn’t seem that QR really bother in which class your are booked to send you an upgrade offer.

Your chance are equals, unless the business cabin is full you will receive the email and the price would be almost the same (on my preferred route, price variation is +/-20$ and isn't linked to my booking class/fare in eco).
I think fare calculation for the business upgrade is more on the cabin "busyness", the more pax have pay for J, the more expansive the upgrade will be.

A new data point:
BEY-DOH originally booked in economy, offered upgrade to first class (which is just glorified economy) for USD 540. Outrageously high, for a 4 hour-long flight (used to get offered USD 350 in the past.)
Needless to say, I passed, especially considering the lack of premium cabin luggage allowance and lounge access (QR has its own first class lounge in BEY.)

What is the site that gives a breakdown of confirmed and open seats on a given flight on a given day? I once subscribed to the site (about 10 years ago) but now my travel needs have changed. In April I have a RT DOH-PEK booked qith QR in N class and will wonder (later) about the chances of upgrading for cash.

I think you’re thinking of expertflyer.com, however in my experience load levels don’t necessarily predict whether or not an upgrade offer will be sent. Two examples recently: DOH-ORD business class was mostly open and no offer came, while DOH-MAA was mostly full and an offer was sent at OLCI.

I got an offer today during OLCI to upgrade my SKP to DOH flight from economy to business for 438EUR http://prntscr.com/mebt11. If it was for the whole segment SKP-DOH-DAR I would consider it but only for the SKP to DOH segment I think is too much.
Maybe I will get better offer on the airport? I will see what they will say there, I can pay up to 200 to 250EUR but not more then that.
Also, silently I hope that I might be bumped up in business because the flight is pretty full, 4 seats left from what I can see and they might fill in. I have silver status and Friday might be my lucky day in that case
