This Wikipost is intended to discuss cash upgrades on QR flights. Historically, QR did not offer this option particularly frequently, but in recent years this has changed and there are now a number of options for upgrading to the next cabin with your hard earned cash.
Now first, the rules – this thread does not deal with Qmiles or Qpoints as an option for upgrading. A thread on the use of Qpoints and Qmiles already exists at the link below – for any questions relating to this way of upgrading, please visit the thread:

Most importantly, this is an interactive thread and requires you to contribute to keep it alive. It’s very simple - If you receive a Special Upgrade Offer via email, please share it with us! This helps your fellow FTers because:
1) It tells them whether or not a fellow FTer has received an SUO on the route they are flying on;
2) It tells them a good ballpark price for a SUO if they are flying the same route as you;
3) It tells them when (historically) to expect an SUO if it is ever going to arrive;
4) It gives a basis for comparison against a reprice of fare.
So when you receive an SUO, all you have to do is post with the following information (copy and paste):

Special Upgrade Offer (SUOs)
Special Upgrade Offers are a one-time opportunity to upgrade to the next cabin for a fixed cash amount. They are normally sent within 14 days of departure via email, and an example of the email is found below (thank you to delfindo who originally shared) :

Economy to Business Class on flight QR 0002 on Tuesday, January 06, 2015 from London Heathrow Apt to Doha at a special price of GBP 482 per person.
This exclusive offer is available on a first come first served basis until 04-Jan-2015 20:30 GMT.
Upgrade to Premium Class and get:
- Access to premium cabin
- Access to premium lounge

QR say to be eligible to receive a SUO, the fare must be ‘eligible for upgrade’ and booked at least 8 days prior to departure. It is not clear how bookings are selected for the offer, or whether there is some sort of priority list.
Some FAQs about Special Upgrade Offers
Can I reserve the upgrade now and pay for it later?
No, you will need to immediately book and pay for the upgrade. The email will not have solely been sent to you, and upgrades are subject to availability – so if you would like to take the offer up, do it as soon as you can.
Can I upgrade my flight with cash at the airport when I check in?
This is called an Airport Upgrade (AUP) and is discussed later in this wiki. It is possible to do this, but will be at a different rate (possibly better than the Special Upgrade rate) and availability is not guaranteed.
Is the upgrade transferable to another passenger on a different PNR?
The upgrade offer is only valid for your booking reference. If they have not received the offer separately, they will not be able to upgrade at this rate.
Can I just upgrade myself and not others on my booking?

QR say to be eligible to receive a SUO, the fare must be ‘eligible for upgrade’ and booked at least 8 days prior to departure. It is not clear how bookings are selected for the offer, or whether there is some sort of priority list.
Some FAQs about Special Upgrade Offers
Can I reserve the upgrade now and pay for it later?
No, you will need to immediately book and pay for the upgrade. The email will not have solely been sent to you, and upgrades are subject to availability – so if you would like to take the offer up, do it as soon as you can.
Can I upgrade my flight with cash at the airport when I check in?
This is called an Airport Upgrade (AUP) and is discussed later in this wiki. It is possible to do this, but will be at a different rate (possibly better than the Special Upgrade rate) and availability is not guaranteed.
Is the upgrade transferable to another passenger on a different PNR?
The upgrade offer is only valid for your booking reference. If they have not received the offer separately, they will not be able to upgrade at this rate.

Amending your Booking – Call or go online
You can call QR at any time to ask for the cash price to upgrade to the next cabin. This will involve a “reprice” of your fare, and the agent will provide you with the cash difference between cabins, enabling you to upgrade.
On occasion, if you have received an SUO it may be cheaper to make use of this option. It is always worth calling to see what the cost of repricing the fare is in comparison with the SUO, but remember to manage expectations and that it is not a competition to barter them down to a lower price.
There have been reports recently (February 2017) that QR are either unable or unwilling to price this type of change on upgrades from J to F where a connection is involved and both flights do not have an F cabin (For example, an itinerary in J from OSL – DOH – BKK where the OSL leg is on the 787 that does not have an F cabin, but you wish to upgrade to F on the DOH – BKK A380 leg). If you do have success in upgrading this type of itinerary, please report back and/or update the wiki.

Airport upgrades are only available on the day of travel from the airport. You cannot call QR to ask for them, or arrange them in advance. AUPs are subject to availability, and the willingness of the agent you are interacting with to sell you one.

any experience on CAN-DOH, I am in J and the F cabin is totally empty now according to expert flyer. If the price is right I would happily try Qatar F and the Al Safwa lounge during my transit, flight is in 4 weeks

I've got an upcoming CDG-DOH flight (QR40, A388). Does anyone know if it'll be possible to upgrade this leg from J to F and if yes what the cost would be? My J-ticket is in R class though.
