True, but you are still only getting one ticketed point deduction, which was his question. That is a good routing though.

Well I managed to get a date leaving on Sept 12 9.55 pm LAX-MIA-PTY arriving on Sept 13th at 11.25 am and turning around the same afternoon at 3.15 pm..
Only issue I see is that I have a 6 hour layover in Miami from midnight to 6 am and not sure that the Admirals Club is opened all night .. Got the deal for $748.50 First and Business into PTY and Business and First back (flat bed)

I live in Austin, so had to get a connection from AUS-DFW-LAX to arrive at 5 pm and return back on Sept 14th have a flight back at 2.25 pm returning back at 8 pm.. all economy and requested 500 miles upgrades .. for $214/

So I think this should be a pretty decent mileage run.. how does one estimate miles earned ?

Just did lax-Tpa-Mia-pty-Mia-JFK-lax on this fare on a platinum challenge and met the goal.
Thanks @supermintyfresh. Best leg was JFK-lax on lie flat business. Had access to admirals lounge in Mia on way there and in Mia and JFK on way back. Pleasantly surprised by PTY. did the canal and touristy things for a couple of days.
If anyone interested in a longer trip report or info about hotels/ things to do please let me know.
Thanks for the help.

Just know that first on that leg is not flat bed. AA has two versions of the 321. The 3-class version only travels on JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO.

You will be flying this: http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Ame...us_A321_V2.php
google flights even says "Standard recliner seat"

Haha no problem. Just curious what hotels did you stay at? I'm thinking about Waldorf Astoria or the new Hilton Panama (rates $130 vs $99 for Waldorf). Have a Hilton credit card so get automatic Gold status.

Also is the canal worth it? Pictures look meh but wonder if it is much better in person. Any recommendations or must-do's? Thanks in advance

I stayed at the Continental hotel and casino on Ave Espana which is about 800m "inland" from the Waldorf and Hilton. The hotel was about 70$ and had Clean comfy bed/ toilet/wifi and good AC. It had a subway/mc Donald's right opposite and also a nice 24 hr cafe and a good middle eastern restaurant in walking distance. Metro train station right outside also. I used a lot of public transport.
Between the two you mentioned I would choose the Hilton which is on Ave Balboa. You will be on the stretch of the avenue right in front of the ocean and with status you can swing a room with a view which should be good. You will have a lot of good eating options around and a mall with a multiplex in walking distance ( I used the multiplex with $4.50 tickets as refuge from a rainy hot night). There is a pedestrian walkway right along the ocean called cinta costera right opposite which will have good views of skyline and a longish walk to the casco viejo area which is the old town district which is good visit.
The canal has ships transiting in the mornin 8am to 11 ish and sometime in afternoon. If you see it as they transit I would give it a go. It's not earth shattering but if already in pty then worth seeing. If outside of those times it does become meh.

Thanks for the write up! Also is this post from 2013 still valid in terms of cab fare? Why the discrepancy

1. Take a cab outside of baggage claim, $30
2. Walk up to the Departure area in PTY, cab only costs $15
3. Bus, only cost $1 but not much information

Any other suggestions? Anyone have any information on the bus?
Edit: also just booked 3 of this PTY MR and 1 of the BOG MR. call me crazy. just a student with too much free time -- and $$. EXP for 2016

Cabs in panama do not run on meters but fares are pre negotiated. $25-$30 from airport to city hotels is par. When you walk out and a cab quotes you tell him you pay $25 and agree on price and on you go. Within the city fares are usually $2-5. Ask a cop/ local what fare should be to where you are going and use that to negotiate. Uber also works in Panama City of but I found fewer cars available.
Disparity is because the cab at departure just dropped off a guy from city and wants to head back and might go back empty . He might take a lower fare since he gets paid for the return without waiting. The guys at arrivals have been waiting for flights to land and are looking at getting full fare or more... Didn't try that but went full native and used public transport..

Oddly enough, this deal also works for UNITED. From YVR. I'm not joking:

YVR-DEN-PTY-DEN-YVR, all in United P, 800USD.- (or 1047 Canadian)

Sample date I have is Aug 22 - Aug 24. bit longer than LAX-MIA-PTY, bit more expensive, but ends up similarly. For those that want a *A option in P. (Ex-SEA I only find +200USD fares tho)
