I unfortunately ran into them last Wednesday (Concourse E). They're being used as primary. Of course, I was chosen while waiting to go through the WTMD. Opted out (the TSOs seemed shocked) and took the patdown, which was so thorough I thought about asking for a cigarette afterwards.

I was not given the option to take my posessions along with me. Luckily my wife was there to pick up everything (of course, that left her to deal with our 14 month old along with all the stuff, by herself).

bolding mine: do you mean not having a tso bring them over so to keep them visible/in your line of sight while you are maSSSSaged or you asking to take them with you. the latter should not happen but you most definitely should have your bags visible/in you line of sight at all times while undergoing a secondary screening-you were fortunate to have your wife with you as if it was me, the process would have stopped and stayed stopped until my bags were brought over

The bags were in my line of sight, but not in front of me. I'd have liked them to take them over, if only so my wife didn't have to deal with the bags and the kid. But if I was by myself, yeah, they would've been there.

The TSOs really did seem confused by my opting out. I'm not sure how many opt-outs they deal with. They had to call the supervisor and search for a male TSO who could pat me down. Plus one of the TSOs asked me "you're opting out?" in the most confused-sounding voice.

Very few people asked to go through (I think I only saw 1 or 2). Be prepared when flying CO/VX from FLL - these are among the worst TSA screeners and you will need to be vocal and firm about refusing your x-ray.
Well actually, I don't like it in FLL at all. TSA are very uncomfortable with the passengers. This is unacceptable the behavioral at FLL. TSA asked the passengers to get through the body scanners but, if they says no. Instead, the passengers who had it right to get through the metal detector is more convenient instead of going through backscatter machines. It will wait more than 10 minutes to get through at security checkpoint in terminal 1. That is real big problems in terminal 1 at C gates.

Outstanding line. I'm going to use it the next time I'm groped.

line of sight on your bags is allowable but make sure you keep 100% eye contact on them regardless if the tso asks you to look at them during the pat down or turn around so they can pat down your back. i had a tso ask me that and i very politely told them that i was keeping an eye on my bags for his protection as well as mine. tso thanked me as he didn't even think of that

+1 ^ and i'm a smoker so it will be easy for me (and if i ever get the pleasure of a cute female tso to do the patdown*, i'll offer her one as well )

Went through FLL F gates last evening. Two Backscatter Human Xray devices installed. Traffic was low so no backup. TSA guy was directing people to the screening lanes. I was directed to WTMD but told the guy I would not go through Backscatter to see he took notice. A lady (pregnant) just in front of me refused the Backscatter Porno Strip Search and a pat down was called for. The only signage I noticed was images on the side of the machines. I saw nothing indicating a person has a choice to OPT OUT.

Seems TSA is forcing people to be screened by WBI.

FLL E Gates also has two Backscatters installed. Long lines at that gate. Saw several guys all in wheelchairs going to the E lines. I cannot imagine the hell TSA put these guys through.

I ran into the same signage situation, which is why I think the TSOs were shocked that I told them I was opting out.

Backscatter is being used in terminal 2 (Delta / Air Canada). There is a small sign explaining the opt out just before you walk into the wtmd/backscatter area. I went towards the Metal Detector instead and they were perfectly fine with it. Looked to be sending about half the people toward the backscatter machine.

The backscatter process looked to be very timeconsuming and the way they had it positioned limited access to the end of the baggage scanner, creating an unnecessary bottleneck.

Not a positive development.

I posted on this in the 'refusal' thread. When I refused, they didn't really know what to do, but going through the WTMD was not an option. Thankfully my trips through T2 are very limited, so I'll know to pad an extra 10 minutes for the groping when I do refuse.

I am more concerned about this becoming a primary option in T1-West.
