The TSOs really did seem confused by my opting out. I'm not sure how many opt-outs they deal with. They had to call the supervisor and search for a male TSO who could pat me down. Plus one of the TSOs asked me "you're opting out?" in the most confused-sounding voice.
line of sight on your bags is allowable but make sure you keep 100% eye contact on them regardless if the tso asks you to look at them during the pat down or turn around so they can pat down your back. i had a tso ask me that and i very politely told them that i was keeping an eye on my bags for his protection as well as mine. tso thanked me as he didn't even think of that

Outstanding line. I'm going to use it the next time I'm groped.
+1 ^ and i'm a smoker so it will be easy for me (and if i ever get the pleasure of a cute female tso to do the patdown*, i'll offer her one as well

)
*i ask every time but......
