An EgyptAir Airbus A320, registration SU-GCC from Paris Charles de Gaulle (flight MS804 departing 18 May) to Cairo with 56 passengers, 2 flight crew, 5 cabin crew and 3 security personnel, lost contact over the Mediterranan Sea about 280km (151nm) from the Coast of Egypt at 02:30 local time (00:30 UTC) on 19 May 2016. Greece's Civil Aviation Authority reported radar contact with the aircraft was lost about 2 minutes after the aircraft was handed off from Greek to Egyptian Air Traffic Control.

At 12:30 CEST (10:30 UTC) 19 May 2016 France's President Hollande announced that the aircraft has crashed while flying over the Mediterranean Sea in Egyptian Airspace.

At 19:00 local time (17:00 UTC) 19 May 2016 EgyptAir posted on their Facebook page that wreckage of the missing aircraft was found near Karpathos Island. This was later denied by the head of the Greek air safety authority. EgyptAir's VP subsequently retracted the statement that debris of the aircraft had been found and said they were mistaken.

On the morning of 20 May 2016 The Egyptian Armed Forces informed EgyptAir that they have found first debris from the missing aircraft operating flight MS804 around 295 KM from the Egyptian coastline.
On 20 May 2016 The Aviation Herald published ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) messages which suggested there was smoke in a lavatory followed by smoke in the avionics bay.

On 22 May 2016 Egypt's President confirmed that the Petroleum Ministry has provided a submarine that could reach 3,000 meters under water in an attempt to retrieve the two black boxes.

On 23 May 2016 the French BEA and Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority, in response to media reports of an emergency call on Egypt's frequency, stated that no such communication has been received on any frequency.

On 1st Jun 2016 Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority reported that the French vessel "Laplace" has located pings presumed to originate from one of two black boxes. The French BEA confirmed that Egyptian Authorities have confirmed a "signal that may come from one of the recorders" of flight MS-804.

On 16 Jun 2016 the vessel "John Lethbridge" managed to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder in several stages as the CVR had been damaged.

On 17 June 2016 the vessel "John Lethbridge" managed to recover the memory module of the second black box, the flight data recorder.

List of nationalities of passengers on Board:

1 British (dual nationality with Australia as confirmed by AU government)
1 Belgian
1 Kuwaiti

Speculation I know but that maybe a clue or coincidence. Didn't the MH370 go down in the DEEPEST part of the Indian Ocean - makes recovery of the FDR etc much more difficult.

The PPRuNE thread on this has someone posting from on board a Maersk ship in the search and rescue area - apparently with photos of some floating debris.

Thanks for pointing out. Something I didn't know.

Topographic and bathymetric map of the Mediterranean basin (map produced with OceanMap by combining a number of different datasets).

Just saw the news and they reported that Egypt is now reporting the event was most likely an act of terrorism.

First off my condolences to the families and the victims.

Here's the actual quote from the Egyptian Aviation Minister. Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-36333992

The situation may point - and I say 'may' because I don't want to speculate and I don't want to go to assumptions like others - but if you analyse the situation properly, the possibility of having a different action, or having a terror attack, is higher than the possibility of having a technical [fault]
Not sure I take this at face value to mean it's definitely terrorism. He claims he doesn't want to speculate but then speculates. He also merely states that it is more likely than a technical fault but that in no way rules out the possibility that it was a technical fault.

It certainly a possibility that terrorism was involved and we'll find out eventually but at this point it seems like it should be added to the rumors and speculation list and certainly not in the definitive list.

I think he's just pointing out the obvious: there are few technical faults that could happen at 37000 feet that would result in explosive decompression.

"Airplane lifejackets have been found by search teams looking for the missing Egyptair flight, report Reuters.

The vests were discovered in the southern Mediterranean by Greek authorities searching for flight MS804 which disappeared this morning, according to Greek state TV.

Earlier, Greek officials said pieces of plastic were found in the sea some 230 miles south of the island of Crete, and two lifevests which appeared to be from an aircraft."

CNN is reporting this prominently.

They're also stressing the experience (flight hours) of the cockpit crew, but I'm wondering how much those hours really mean across airlines. Beyond some reasonable level of experience, I would think that a good continuing training program and lots of time on very sophisticated simulators to practice for various emergency situations would be much more meaningful than simply counting hours spent in the pilot or copilot seat at cruising altitude.

Yeah, and another apparent similarity is that the incidents occurred just as the flight was being handed off to another country's air traffic control system, when there might be a tendency not to recognize immediately that the aircraft has gone missing.

I don't think any parallel to MH 370.

Unless cockpit crew turned off tracking or communications devices - this plane was still tracked on radar, in contact with ATC and went down in a specific zone/area.

The depth isn't as much as factor as narrowing to a specific area/zone to find the beacon. All speculation but the circumstances here are quite evident of a major quick mid-air disaster prior to descent.

This is super creepy. It's been 804 days since MH370 went missing.
