An EgyptAir Airbus A320, registration SU-GCC from Paris Charles de Gaulle (flight MS804 departing 18 May) to Cairo with 56 passengers, 2 flight crew, 5 cabin crew and 3 security personnel, lost contact over the Mediterranan Sea about 280km (151nm) from the Coast of Egypt at 02:30 local time (00:30 UTC) on 19 May 2016. Greece's Civil Aviation Authority reported radar contact with the aircraft was lost about 2 minutes after the aircraft was handed off from Greek to Egyptian Air Traffic Control.

At 12:30 CEST (10:30 UTC) 19 May 2016 France's President Hollande announced that the aircraft has crashed while flying over the Mediterranean Sea in Egyptian Airspace.

At 19:00 local time (17:00 UTC) 19 May 2016 EgyptAir posted on their Facebook page that wreckage of the missing aircraft was found near Karpathos Island. This was later denied by the head of the Greek air safety authority. EgyptAir's VP subsequently retracted the statement that debris of the aircraft had been found and said they were mistaken.

On the morning of 20 May 2016 The Egyptian Armed Forces informed EgyptAir that they have found first debris from the missing aircraft operating flight MS804 around 295 KM from the Egyptian coastline.
On 20 May 2016 The Aviation Herald published ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) messages which suggested there was smoke in a lavatory followed by smoke in the avionics bay.

On 22 May 2016 Egypt's President confirmed that the Petroleum Ministry has provided a submarine that could reach 3,000 meters under water in an attempt to retrieve the two black boxes.

On 23 May 2016 the French BEA and Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority, in response to media reports of an emergency call on Egypt's frequency, stated that no such communication has been received on any frequency.

On 1st Jun 2016 Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority reported that the French vessel "Laplace" has located pings presumed to originate from one of two black boxes. The French BEA confirmed that Egyptian Authorities have confirmed a "signal that may come from one of the recorders" of flight MS-804.

On 16 Jun 2016 the vessel "John Lethbridge" managed to retrieve the cockpit voice recorder in several stages as the CVR had been damaged.

On 17 June 2016 the vessel "John Lethbridge" managed to recover the memory module of the second black box, the flight data recorder.

So it's all gone a bit quiet on this one...
Did they actually find anything after the reported signal was observed? Without wanting to don a tinfoil hat, is there anything unusual about the lack of news..?

BBC News story on wreckage find: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-36543969:

Wreckage of the EgyptAir flight that went missing over the Mediterranean last month has been found, Egyptian investigators say.

A statement said "several main locations of the wreckage" had been identified.

The Egyptian investigation committee said that investigators on board a search vessel in the area would now draw up a map of the wreckage distribution spots.

Cockpit voice recorder found damaged, but they were able to salvage the memory unit:

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-eg...-idUSKCN0Z12H7

Egypt's public prosecutor was informed and ordered that the recovered device, one of two so-called black boxes on the plane, be handed over to the Egyptian investigating team for analysis.

The device is now being transferred from the vessel, John Lethbridge, to the coastal city of Alexandria where representatives from the public prosecution and investigators are waiting to receive it, the statement said.

Can everyone feel the heavy and pervasive vice of Egyptian security over every aspect of this investigation?

In the early days there were lots of outputs- but once they all tamped down, the volunteer boats searching went off to their normal tasks- then EVERYTHING went through Egypt: every boat stopped in an Egyptian port FIRST (to onboard security/military/control staff??) before they engaged in search....

We shall see how complete the information is- but this is the same country who maintains MS990 was NOT a murder/suicide by pilot. I wonder what would have happened if that investigation was done in Egypt....

from the MS990 wiki:

As the crash occurred in international waters, the responsibility for investigating the accident fell to the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority (ECAA) per International Civil Aviation Organization Annex 13. As the ECAA lacked the resources of the much larger American National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Egyptian government asked the NTSB to handle the investigation. Two weeks after the crash, the NTSB proposed handing the investigation over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as the evidence suggested that a criminal act had taken place and that the crash was intentional rather than accidental. This proposal was unacceptable to the Egyptian authorities, and hence the NTSB continued to lead the investigation. As the evidence of a deliberate crash mounted, the Egyptian government reversed its earlier decision and the ECAA launched its own investigation. The two investigations came to very different conclusions: the NTSB found the crash was caused by deliberate action of the relief first officer Gameel Al-Batouti;[1] the ECAA found the crash was caused by mechanical failure of the aircraft's elevator control system.

Earlier on Friday, an unnamed official in the investigation committee told AP news agency that the voice recorder's data was already being analysed by experts, including representatives of France's air safety agency and the plane's manufacturer, Airbus.
BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-36557134

The Egyptian-led investigation team, already assisted by investigators from France's BEA air accident investigation agency, will now be joined by two representatives of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
..
Egypt said on Monday it had accepted a request by the NTSB to have representatives join the investigation team.

The voice and data recorders from the EgyptAir plane that crashed into the Mediterranean nearly a month ago are "extensively damaged" and will need repairs before they can be analysed, an Egyptian official has said, dampening hopes for early answers as to what caused the disaster.

The official did not elaborate on how long the repairs would take but said if they could not be done in Egypt, the black boxes would be sent abroad. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

Two possibilities:

1. They have the recordings but need to buy time to allow senior politicians to 'digest and spin'

or 2. They have a problem. Couldnt download...then allowed two NTSB techs to assist...on the verge of losing the ability to control the data if the parts leave Egypt.

They have already requested NTSB technical assistance with recovering the data.

Yes, the recorders were both reported as being extensively damaged at the time of their recovery, however, the actual data modules were described as being intact and it is expected the data will be recovered.

No need to read any cover-up or conspiracy into this.

In a statement, the Egyptian investigative committee said the two recorders would be sent to France's BEA accident experts to remove salt deposits from the memory chips.
They will then be returned to Egypt for analysis.
