Randy, can you please create an "Obscure Baseball Trivia" Forum, at least for the next week or so?

(Since we've been talking about the DH today: in 1979, one AL manager decided to ridicule the idea of the designated hitter by executing a certain game action. Who was the manager, what was the action he took, and what rule change did it eventually lead to?)

Was that when Earl Weaver put starting pitchers on their days off in the DH slot, then pitch-hit for them on their first plate appearance? He did this to leave an element of surprise in the lineup, and the rule was changed the next year to require the DH to have at least one full plate appearance.

(Oh, my, I've just gone off-topic. If Randy closes the Only Randy Petersen forum due to my actions I take full responsibility.)

Skip, don't apologize as you asked the same as others - do something. I don't even feel offended so your posting privileges are not in any danger. I and the TalkBoard will work toward a solution that you and others can post with - whatever that may be.

The only thing that I'm dissapointed about is that i thought i deserved at least a C- for the follow-through. There's a bunch of other members on FT who didn't try at all and they still get good grades from you..... HA!

So, how was your day?
</font>
I will review my grading processes. Perhaps, due to the fact that it is mid-term, not end of year, a grade on the curve is in order. I appreciate you taking your report card in the order it was intended.

My day was good, hopefully I won't go home to find my bunny in the soup pot on the stove.

FWIW, on my own report card, I seem to be faring much worse than a D+ for packaging and delivery. Content is passing though.

Randy, I understand why you did this.

Skip, SHAME ON YOU for insulting our gracious host of 5 years.

Maybe this will serve to calm everyone down & make Omni the fun place it used to be.

I agree. I enjoyed seeing the viewpoints of, and sparring with other folks in OMNI. It was always a nice diversion from work, and however heated the discussions, it never was designed to be taken too seriously. Especially not to slam the person who provided this free resource and playground. Most other BB's have some sort of agenda where you are either preaching to the choir or p'ing in the wind; here, at least, there was a variety of viewpoints on many issues.

Was it Whitey Herzog? Can we call this the ORP forum? Moderator: "As this topic has nothing to do with miles nor points, I'm moving this thread to ORP, please follow it there..."

LastClass is correct.

The last straw was when Weaver's lineup card included a pitcher that, although on the active roster, wasn't even at the ballpark that day.

Shortly after that, the powers-that-be put a stop to the practice.

OMNI has been pretty quiet and mild-mannered recently. At least in the threads I've seen.
(So I do wonder what this is about.)

This seemed to co-incide with Guava's complaint thread given some prominence in Randy's
personal forum, and the closing of one long thread. Did this have an effect, or was there
something else in play, I don't know.

Or maybe this issue revolves around something else completely...

Doppy:
"A couple people can't manage to control themselves."

Well, there are the people who show obvious disrespect for the forum and its participants,
and who make personal attacks, and then there are those who can't avoid responding to these
attacks, if only to defend themselves, or their position.

And quite often, people confuse criticism of their argument as criticism of themselves, or,
alternatively, confuse attacking someone's position with attacking the person.

There is a fine line here, but sometimes when there is an extreme and obvious case of overstepping
this line, it should be dealt with, otherwise this behavior is condoned and encouraged.

This should include profanity and other demeaning comments applied to the person or their
position. It is fine to argue forcefully, but profanity is no substitute for logic or thought.
I'm not trying to ban profanity, but to heap obvious disrespect on someone or their position,
just to make them feel bad, is a despicable tactic.

While it is OK for a poster to be ignorant or pompous, and for a discussion to be at cross-purposes,
there are things in the TOS that should be enforced. As it has been mentioned, one person
can trigger many others to respond in various ways, and spoil the whole environment.

Is there an equal burden on the attacker or instigator, as there is on the person being
attacked? I don't think so.

While it is sometimes useful to not respond, or to respond in a civil manner, in order to
preserve a sense of decorum, it should not become a requirement in the TOS, equal to the
existing requirement to not instigate attacks.

Doppy:
"Now we're back in the days of grade school where if one person messes up, we all lose our recess.

I don't agree that, if there is a quarrel, then both parties get punished equally. (The
only advantage to this method of dispensing justice is that it is easy.) If the idea is
to only prevent quarrels, but allow agressive taunts, then OK. But I believe it is more
important to stop the sources of trouble first.

And, I agree, to punish everybody is not the way to go.

That being said, nobody has the right to demand, or the right to have, an OMNI forum. It is
purely up to whoever wants to provide (or not provide) such a Forum.

Maybe a time-out for everyone would cool off any emotional thoughts and actions, while the
people in charge reorganize the forum. And it would give some of the rest of us 'a life' for
a while.

I just hope that others don't go on an immersion course in bad habits on lesser boards
in the meantime...

You know, there are technological solutions for boys who can't control their toys.

There are forums that prevent threads older than a certain amount of time being posted to or replied to...

I'll miss OMNI, as I certainly have learned a great deal and made a good number of acquaintances.

I hope OMNI comes back. But if it doesn't, it was good being a part of it.

Now back to work...

I completely agree.

If doc's posts, or posting style, or posting frequency, is what this is all about, then this
is just a tempest in a teapot.

I DO think it is unusual bahavior, but my only disappointment usually is that NO-ONE ELSE
posted anything of some significance.

What, you don't think correctly predicting that Oregon would win Miss Teen USA was significant?

Randy,

I am fairly new to the world of FT so I am not aware of the prior Omni infractions. Generally, the topics and posts appear to be respectful (or without insulting comments) of others. However, there are a few Bad Apples that have apparently spoiled the bunch. I will support what ever means that you and the FT board feel is necessary to place Omni back into a more respectful forum. Thanks for offering FlyerTalk to this road warrior. I appreciate the respite this site offers me.

Best regards,

Randy,

I want to thank you for giving this your attention. I'll certainly be disappointed to see OMNI go for a week, but if it means that a solution can at long last be reached, then the cost be d*mned! We'll get along without it for a week.

As the original poster on this thread asking for help and as an active participant in the brouhaha of the last 9 weeks, I'm, of course, available to answer any questions or provide any feedback, should you be soliciting it from those of us on both sides.

You have my email address above.

I know this isn't an easy topic, but my thanks, again, to you and to the TalkBoard for reviewing this and helping bring some wisdom to bear on the situation.

Maybe in a week or so OMNI will be open again. I can dream.

Then I'll be able to go to the FT Miles section of FT to exchange info on airline, car, and hotel programs and then I'll be able to go to the FT Travel section to enjoy the company of my fellow FT'ers in conversations about all things not travel related in OMNI.

I like to go to OMNI because it gives me the opportunity to get to know members of the FT community. This just is not possible if we speak only of airline miles and hotel points. How else would I know that PierreMcLopez likes Fat Tire Ale? Or that chexfan finds Miss Teenage Maryland more attractive than Miss Kansas? Or that richard prefers to paint the basement in the morning rather than the evening?

As for all the cut and paste news clips that show up in OMNI on a very regular basis, I really don't care at all for them. Not one bit. And I also don't like the attitude that allows someone to do something over and over again and then retreat to the protective fringe of the TOS and claim innocence. It's not technically against the law to slam the door in an elderly woman's face right as she reaches the door but it sure is rude and impolite. And chances are it will not earn you any friends. But that's just me.

I'll thank Randy and the TB in advance for their work.
