Still probably a few years from that unfortunately. QR is trying to get WB (RwandAir) into OneWorld and will give that much needed intra-Africa coverage but as of now it's still just a partner of QR. Losing BA's Comair franchise in South Africa certainly hurt but wouldn't have helped you in any case as their international network was quite limited. AT isn't much help intra-Africa either since Morocco is counted as Europe and their Africa network isn't very strong either.

I'm putting African on my next DONEx for this winter and would love to hop around a bit but just not an option at the moment, so I'll use a ground segment there, fly QR into EBB and out of NBO. Then just use Avios for some WB flights in the region since business class flights intra-Africa are quite expensive, even a lot of economy is pretty expensive.

You are quite right! My plan is to do the Africa portion late 2024, so if WB somehow (Inshallah) gets onboarded onto OW before then I would probably try to cancel a few of those wasted surface sectors to get back some sectors and get a bit more a trip out. Funnily enough, I was tossing up between Tanzania and Kenya (the former won) - but I completely forgot that you could redeem Avios on WB so I owe you a beer for that!

I have... (perhaps controversially) I am not a massive fan of DOH. I find it incredibly sterile and boring. But it is only a 3.5 hour transit between LHR-DOH and DOH-ATL, so I think I will stomach that for the extra TPs and on D class you still get access to Al Mourjan...

  • Can I save on YQ / QR by ticketing any of these (particularly point 1 and point 8) on another OW codeshare (e.g. AA codeshare but operated by BA)?
In case if anybody is interested - have managed to get AA RTW to price this. Base fare (as at today for DONE5 ex-OSL) is GBP 5,057. I have been told that the YQ/YR total is GBP 721 (no breakdown carrier-by-carrier was forthcoming; I am just told that it comprises GBP 22.70YQ + GBP 327.00YQ + GBP 84.50YR + GBP 287.20YR) and taxes on top are GBP 495. All booked through the operating carrier's own prime codes (i.e. no codeshares).

My guess is that GBP 327.00YQ is QR's YQ (based on a fixed amount that QR charge of USD 420 as implied by ernestnywang post above) and GBP 287.20YR is CX's YQ (based on the current per sector fuel surcharge of USD 92.20 x 4 sectors).

Again, anybody shout if they have any ideas on reducing YQ / YR but I suspect that, short of finding a Sabre agent that can autoprice and plate on QR (I know of none), there probably isn't much room here to reduce any further (especially as I understand that AS won't ticket OW RTWs)? TIA!

Tried to input your itinerary but Sabre will not autoprice even if I took out some of the segments. At most it will quote a LGLOB39 (with many sectors removed) with some sectors upgraded to premium economy. I could not figure out why. There is no DGLOB39 (at least not ex-OSL), so there is no way to autoprice that. Sorry can't help this time.

I think you did pretty well on the YQ / YR for an ex-OSL itinerary, I'd let that be and run with it.

+1. I concur.

My own experience after a DONE3 and a DONE4, both with many QR & CX segments. Both times AA priced and ticketed for me with QR (OSL-DOH) in first segment.

According to oneworld Explorer rules: 'Travel may not be via the point of origin.'

Would the following routing be allowed as the first three segments of a xONEx:

NRT-BKK-HND-JFK (no stopover at HND)

Thanks.

Edit: Just found out the answer is no:

'Only one international departure and one international arrival from/to the country of origin
permitted.'

Can a Oneworld Explorer created by an airline (such as AA) be modified by a TA

Can a partially flown Oneworld Explorer purchased from an airline (AA) be modified by a TA to replace airline sectors with codeshares (e.g. QF) consistent with Oneworld Explorer rules? While legal in Oneworld, AA have a policy of not using codeshares on AA metal.

I appreciate there may be an increase in taxes/YQ which would have to be paid as a result.

Can this be done, or is the booking locked to AA, and only AA can make changes?

LOL, that would certainly be the dream scenario for anyone crediting to AA, wouldn't it? Book with AA, knowing they require their code when available then change them all to codeshare on BA / AY/ IB / QR / QF codes for the big cabin bonus and mostly to avoid the revenue penalty. (well in theory AA cabin bonus is better than QF, but only if it credits as a special fare and AA refuses to give a definitive answer about when that does / does not trigger)

Unfortunately it's not possible if AA creates the ticket. But the other way around is in certain circumstances, usually when dealing with SWUs and within 24 hours of departure for irrops.

No. A TA may be able to view the PNR in certain cases, but certainly will not be able to claim a ticketed and partially flown PNR/ticket from airline.
Other oneworld carriers theoretically can take over the ticket and re-issue it on their own stock (with the possibility of recalculating YQ/YRs). I think very few are willing to do it these days and will likely ask you to go back to AA. Another layer of complexity is that AA and AS use Sabre, while all other oneworld carriers use Amadeus. While chances are still low, you might have a slightly better chance to ask the carrier of your next departing flight to take over.

I tried several times, unsuccessfully, to get QR to take over my QF ticket when I was unable to find anyone at QF competent enough to make date changes. Of course as always, ,YMMV in different situations.

QF seems to be restricting D availability to AA

I posted earlier (#1421) about the fact that JL is showing lots of D availability on EF but AA cannot book it. Now I am finding the same problem with QF: for example BKK-SYD on Sep 19 on QF 24, EF is showing D6 but AA cannot book them. Is anybody else having this problem? Is there a reduced "sub-set" of D inventory that limits AA's access to general D?
It reduces the value of EF alerts because EF may show D available, but then you call AA and they cannot book it!

In addition to Point of Sale (POS), Point of Commencement (POC) may matter, too, and I think the problem with EF is that it cannot take POC into consideration.

My POS is Taiwan, but looking at POC MAD versus POC BKK, the D class availability on QF24/19SEP/BKKSYD is quite different (2 vs 7).

Thank you, that is very interesting; I had never heard of Point of Commencement before.
So on an RTW that may have commenced many months ago, is the POC the start of the RTW, or the start of travel on the day of travel?

In the example I was working on, the travellers are starting in OSL in August, but the BKK-SYD segment on SEP 19 is the first segment on that day of travel.
So is the POC OSL or BKK?
Do you know if this POC issue is common or rare? If common, it makes EF searches unreliable.

Thanks,
