I still feel the same way....unanswered questions....
FT staff shouldn't get involved in issues like this....unless they know the person 'offline'.

This is not directed at Hersheymom or anyone personally, but I have concern also that word will get out that FT is a clearinghouse for getting free trips... lots of potential for abuse and clutter.

FQTV,
I think you may be right. These boards would begin to look like the website we all charge to for Frequent flyer points! LOL
It is sad. There are good causes and folks out there that need help.

Here's my CC #... feel free to charge your trip to it....
My point is: The net is full (and i mean FULL) of unscrupulous people trying to take advantage of others. I am in no way implying that this is the case here.. I believe it is not. But I'm sure that you can understand why we need more info.
I personally think the web is not a suitable medium for requests of such a personal nature, unless you have had positive past experiences with someone and feel you can trust them COMPLETELY.
Others may be less cautious than I am, but I have learned from experience that one MUST act carefully and exercise due diligence before getting involved in any net-based transaction (common sense really, but people sometimes do not stop and think).
My prayers are with you and your family, and I hope everything turns out well.

WOW-
you Mom is very sick, but you are unwilling to use Priceline or a consolidator because you won't get miles for your trip?
Let me get this straight. You are only willing to go to visit your sick mom if someone else pays for your ticket, and refuse to make it less expensive because you might not get miles on your trip. If you are being honest, then you priorities, in my opinion are way out of whack.
Who would care about accruing miles in a time like this?
When my grandfather was dying and I was living on student loans alone near the poverty level, I took a 3 leg flight on 3 separate airlines to visit him and comfort my grandmother. None of those airliens were my airline of choice, and one of those tickets was from priceline. It took me an entire day to get there, and I didn't get the miles I wanted, but I found a way to get there that I could afford, and I got there by any means necessary.
If you want to get there so bad, go on Greyhound to LAX and get a consolidator fare. Yeha, your trip will be long and unpleasant, but you'll get to see your mom for a very reasonable price, and isn't that what's important?

This message is also in response to SnoGal's message that has since disappeared.
I don't get it. There are lots of charitable organizations out there (ie. Religous congregations, Rotary clubs, etc.) and I can't think of a SINGLE ONE where some stranger walks in and asks for a free trip to Hawaii, and then has a HORRIBLE IMPRESSION of the members because they don't give them what they ask for, but offer alternative suggestions as to how that person might accomplish the stated goal.
In every post I have made, I have wished this person and her mother the best. I continue to do so.
If I were her, I would do the one of the following:
1) Hit up family and friends first.
2) Take a cheap flight to LA and get a consolidator ticket to HNL.
3) Use Priceline.
4) Take the greyhound to LA and take a consolidator flight.
The bottom line is that if you're not willing to do those things and make the sacrifices that are encompassed therein, it's not that important to you.
And I agree, that people should not presumptavely laugh, but her comment about not using priceline because she wouldn't get miles was, in my opinion, reflective of someone whose priorities were screwed up.
Peace to all.

I've been "lurking" and occasionally posting for about a year now and have found everyone here to be extrememly helpful to me and others, but this request may go beyond the call of duty. If anyone can step forward and vouch for this person and have a way we can help, I'm in.

I bave the feeling HersheyHonneymoon has got the point. Also as someone stated before if this person would use a free ticket they wouldn't get the miles either. TRY PRICE LINE WITH ALL THE OPTIONS YOU SHOULD GET A GOOD DEAL.

I think it was snogal who said she sent this person to the board and prompted sosafan's "Customer? I dont'get it." response, but her post has disappeared in the last half-hour.
In any event, if snogal encouraged this hersheymom to post such a topic, she should have been on the board immediately, telling us the why and how of hersheymom's needs and that she can vouch for hersheymom. Then our responses would more than likely have been considerably different.

I have to agree with BoSoxFan, the not using priceline because you won't get the miles is a little wierd given the stated circumstances.

I removed snogal's post since she's one of our busiest reps here, and wasn't able to return and edit her post like she wanted. Also, we're not vouching for anyone... it was a phone call we received asking for help with a fare, so we directed her up to FlyerTalk and suggested posting a topic about it.
there have been a lot of good responses in this thread, both for and against the original topic, but there have also been some very reactionary replies that do nothing but fuel the flame war. I think Hersheymom has received a true baptism under fire here and now knows that "barter" is not a term that is taken lightly with our veteran FT'ers.
Again, I want to apologize for all the confusion that has resulted. We're not taking anyone's side here, just directing callers to FlyerTalk for help, since FlyerTalk is the place for frequent travelers to ask for information and assistance.
It looks like this thread is providing some very useful information for anyone looking for help in purchasing tickets, and that really is what FlyerTalk is all about...sharing info.
