Rudi, I have a stash of lanterns and flags from past August 1 celebrations as well as great photos of the startlingly close fireworks set off in front of the Wengen tennis courts. Fond memories.
My young country is getting older and the local celebrations are akin to Swiss August 1 celebrations in our small towns sand big cities.

Well put, droneklax. I think you have identified the crux of the matter and I missed it. Thailand is looking real good about now.

Naxos: It sure does. I am even looking forward to getting all my shots next week!

I thought about my post again, after considering my years as a poor student having to pay exhorbitant out-of-state fees: before hiting ANYONE for anything they have earned, I'd sell my computer. Or my CD collection ( I actually did that to pay that last quarter of Ph.D. tuition), stop smoking, sell whatever else is laying around in the house. I'd sell lemonade. If all that fails, then I'd hit the board.

That's just me. However, we must keep in mind that the present circumstances might be quite different and might justify keeping a computer at home while asking others for help for a plane ticket. We don't know.

Are you really serious?

If I needed to get to Hawaii so badly for some reason such as yours, I would give up all of my 1000000 miles in the bank and the right to earn any more ever again in my life!!

And, if I really needed to go, I could not really give a sh@t about the miles, as long as I got to Hawaii to do what I have to do.

It's ok to be addicted to miles and stuff, but there is a place where you must draw the line.

I've had people approach me to ask for a dollar to make an emergency long distance phone call, or $20 to buy a Greyhound bus ticket home. Sometimes I've then offered to go with them to the phone and pay for their entire call, or to the bus station and purchase the ticket to go home that they claimed they needed to buy. It's remarkable how rapidly they lose interest in speaking to me at that point.

hersheymom, it would be so easy for you to demonstrate your situation is genuine. Call Dan at WebFlyer or anybody else at WebFlyer. Give your name, your mom's name, the hospital, phone number of the doctor, etc. You can ask for total confidentiality from Dan that he not release any of the information to anybody on this board. It's hardly asking a lot of you.

My previous company had a program where employees who needed emergency time off in order to provide medical care or just be with close relatives who were dying could get vacation time donated to them by other employees to reduce the financial burden on them. But it was critical to me that such a program be administered by HR, who can be relied upon to maintain confidentiality but at the same time verify the facts. That's just the way life works in the real world....

To those who say that they are disappointed at fellow FTers' responses: I think that actually most everybody has remained rather civil. The most uncivil tone has been in those messages accusing the rest of us of being angry toward hersheymom, in my opinion. Skepticism is a healthy thing, and it's not the same thing as always assuming the worst about human nature.

It is Saturday morning, and still not a hersheymom sighting (er, posting) to read of. I keep checking this thread in the hope of her posting something with respect to this, but to no avail. I can only wonder why...

NYC1, yeah, I can do the math. For those people that are still wondering- this is a case in point why I (and perhaps some others) have cause to feel skeptical.

May be a little late posting but everyone has made a great point. FT is comprised of many great, honest, and decent people who I think would help anyone who was truly in need and could demonstrate such. My only comment is, if my mother were dying, I certainly would be there ASAP (of course using the most economical means if I had a limited budget) without regard of cost. I too, am suspicious and would gladly offer whatever help I could if hersheymom's situation could be documented. Earning FF miles should be her last concern with just getting there being her first.

Happy 4th of July to everyone and enjoy the holiday!

Even before this thread went negative, Many offered to assist Hersheymon. I was one. Did anyone get a note from her. My Email address was in my post and was supprise not to hear. I have donated miles before I find it very unusual.

Is there an end to this story?

Was the original post real?
Did she get to Hawaii?
How? Were some of our suggestions helpful?
