I would happily stop in SJO instead of CA. Can you explain in a little bit more detail on how to accomplish/find the route you listed?
I checked to see the possibility of SJO and spoke to an AA rep, she said that the stopover has to be less than 4 hours or the next leg is considered a new one way award. I don't see how I could accomplish that route in F seeing as its 30k per leg.

The poster is suggesting you to pick SJO as your DESTINATION, when you originate the trip from HNL (or returning from HNL). You can route it to MIA as your stopover (so you are returning home) then later continue your journey to SJO.

You can actually book such itinerary on AA website yourself using MultiCity function.

To give you an idea, I currently hold a ticket that is HNL-LAX-MIA-LIM with the HNL-LAX-MIA has already been flown in Oct, but the MIA-LIM segment is currently booked to travel in January though I would definitely change the date to some later date when I get around to look at it. It actually costed me LESS miles in coach than just HNL-LAX-MIA, due to the travel started in the offpeak season of North America to Central / South America 1 region. (Only coach awards have Peak / Offpeak pricing in certain regions.)

Personally I have no interest to spend my AA miles in domestic F products - I would much prefer to spend it on AA partners' F products which we just did - just returned from HKG in CX F a week ago - 67.5K well spent for HKG-YYZ stopover for a few days, then YYZ-MIA to home.

I fugured that was what the poster meant except if i understand correctly the last leg (mia-sjo) if ever used will be considered a new leg and cost more miles to take that trip if you decide too. ( im assuming this because the woman from aa reservation said that any stopover over 4 hours will be considered a new leg (and charged appropriately). SO if i understand correctly, I save on the trip to mia but don't gain the future trip to sjo?

Like someone else said, you want to fly HNL-DFW-MIA and stopover.
Then fly MIA-SJO within the year so you get 2 trips out of one miles redemption.
Then what you want to do is to fly SJO-MIA and stopover and fly MIA-XXX.

If you have the miles, I recommend flying F on HNL trip on 767 for 30k miles.
My limit for coach flight is 3 hours so it's a no brainer for me.
Also, I recommend you familiarize yourself with the stopover rules on major airlines.

You have a miscommunication issue with the AAgent over the phone.

Again, unless MIA-SJO is on partner airline, you could book that HNL-MIA-SJO trip yourself on AA website. If MIA-SJO is on partner airline then you would need to book by phone and pay the phone ticketing fee. Then there is also an added complication - the partner used for the MIA-SJO needs to have a published fare for HNL-SJO, if not, then yes, there would be 2 awards.

I dont know if AA flies MIA-SJO. Just go to AA website and construct the trip HNL-MIA-SJO using multicity function with MIA being your stopover and see for yourself.

I just completed a booking to Europe for the first time, on a pay economy FFP points and get a business ticket..

I needed 4 business class seats.. sort of like shoehorning something almost impossible.. so I checked from YYC.. CUN, MCO, HI, Australia, etc.. Finally got something in London Heathrow..

My wife has been wanting to visit Europe.. and I've never been, so this will be the very first time for me. So for 60,000 points per seat, total 240,000.. we booked economy points for business class seats.. With stops to NY going, and Toronto coming back..

Plus bonus, we'll be at the London Olympics.^ Didn't know until we finished booking.

The lowest priced ticket without stopovers from Calgary to London on Business is $4,750 approximately per seat.. So 6.3 cents per mile..

Usually I just book Y, but can see how the value of the bookings jump when booking business and first.

thanks to the FT community.. wouldn't have been able to do this without all of the help!

Are you planning on staying in London during the Olympics? Please tell me you have a hotel lined up already, or are staying with family/friends. And if you want tickets, they go in sale TODAY, Tue, 12PM EST through CoSport.

This is on AC? With YQ and APD these tickets should cost $600+ each. Don't cheat on your cpm calculations.

Sorry to get off-topic. FWIW, I'd fly twice to Hawaii in coach rather than once in first, if its first on a narrowbody.

with all due respect...Miami is no Kauai...you'll see. I don't feel we're talking ribeye vs filet here...but you be the judge. if you have to fly E, Hawaiian is about as good as it gets...you'll enjoy the experience. but, saying that, any trip home from Hawaii sucks...regardless of class of service...

Enjoy...and Aloha...

I don't think Delta offers those rates from MIA or FLL at least not that I can see.

Thanks for the heads up on the Olympic tickets.. I just booked yesterday so no I haven't lined up accomodations yet..

I went onto www.expedia.com and chose the routing Calgary to London Heathrow.. The lowest priced booking with taxes was approximately $4,750 each on business.. less $900 in taxes, is $3,850 divided by 60,000 miles (I booked 60K as opposed to the regular 90K point requirement for business based on the promo going on in the link I provided above).. works out if I calculated correctly 6.4 cents per mile (original calculation 6.3 cents per mile rounded down)..
