You can actually book such itinerary on AA website yourself using MultiCity function.
To give you an idea, I currently hold a ticket that is HNL-LAX-MIA-LIM with the HNL-LAX-MIA has already been flown in Oct, but the MIA-LIM segment is currently booked to travel in January though I would definitely change the date to some later date when I get around to look at it. It actually costed me LESS miles in coach than just HNL-LAX-MIA, due to the travel started in the offpeak season of North America to Central / South America 1 region. (Only coach awards have Peak / Offpeak pricing in certain regions.)
Personally I have no interest to spend my AA miles in domestic F products - I would much prefer to spend it on AA partners' F products which we just did - just returned from HKG in CX F a week ago - 67.5K well spent for HKG-YYZ stopover for a few days, then YYZ-MIA to home.
I fugured that was what the poster meant except if i understand correctly the last leg (mia-sjo) if ever used will be considered a new leg and cost more miles to take that trip if you decide too. ( im assuming this because the woman from aa reservation said that any stopover over 4 hours will be considered a new leg (and charged appropriately). SO if i understand correctly, I save on the trip to mia but don't gain the future trip to sjo?
