Refresh my memory, was this ticket ever "Voluntary Changeable" at any given moment due to waiver?
I always remember the original ticketing rules was rather strict "No Change, No Refund, No Nothing"

Every single time I've made a re-issue was "Invol" due to schedule changes, which has continued to save my Bacon

Another data point to report back.
Method Used - US Chat

Rebooked to End of Schedule, still IT - HKG.
Took the agent about 15 mins to rebooked, auto-rebook apparently accepted the last schedule change even though I didn't agree to it.
And that change was flying +4 days later, uh... I don't think so

I just keep changing origins between MXP and FCO and Finnair has never blinked an eye

I'm wondering if this will go longer than the CX Vietnam fare.

LMAO 🤣🤣🤣

Hard to say, its got a shot. 😀

CX Vietnam was 1/1/2019 original ticketing.
AY was 10/27/2019, at least for my tickets.

However, CX is only rebooking for the 1st few days when the route gets reinstated (repeatedly deferred) 🤣.
AY HKG is moreso 99.7% of the world is not qualified for entry, despite HEL-HKG is still running 2x weekly right now.

AY also seems to be willing to do INVOLs and look the other way on alot of rules provided your origin/destination country remains the same.
- Add/Remove HEL >24 hrs stopovers
- Switch different IT cities
- Change from Round trip to Open jaw A-B-C to Open Jaw C-B-A

I say AY tickets have a chance of lasting longer, if you catch the right time to use an INVOL and travel curtain starts drawing down.
Way happier to have my hands clean with CX and just need to deal with AY going forward.

And of course one's willingness to embrace HK's Ministry of Love

I refunded at the earliest opportunity - made some money on the exchange rate too!

since AY admits HK is a seperate country from china, there is not a lot of places you can reroute your destination outside of Hong Kong. (Allegedly someone moved to BKK or sth when travel restrictions were first initiated last year)

I had a chat last week and was told by the rep that even if one is not allowed to enter the country due to restrictions, AY wont offer a free rebooking (anymore?). Only a refund may be possible.

So was happy to receive a "schedule change" mail from AY yesterday. They seem to have cancelled AY101 to HKG for whole 2021. Shouldnt be a problem to rebook to 2022 now? (or is there a max ticket validity?)

The validity of the ticket is twelve months. That's what it says in small print. I was denied a rebooking based on this regulation. It also didn't help to refer to the EU rules and laws. I was simply ignored. My impression was that they now want to get rid of these tickets and also do not want to waste time and nerves to constantly worry about the rebooking.

I really don't get that, we are the only pax on the world who don't want a refund.. Then there are invol changes which means EC261 and they ignore it..

Just let us rebook, so we can fly and they get to keep the cash; so everyone is happy.

Twelve month validity is an IATA regulation, not AY’s choice.

It’s also a technical irrelevance, because AY can reissue (replace) the ticket in this situation though.

Overcome by re-issuing a new ticket?

I keep hearing this point and yet there are plenty of reports from various airlines of people getting bookings moved well beyond a year from when they were originally made (me included) and yet the sky hasn’t fallen in despite this IATA rule?

It is a rule on the ticket but reissuing the ticket resets its validity in the system. It is just a limitation on that specific ticket. Reissuing is a airline decision as the airline can set whatever price they like and whatever flexibility they want to offer.

I get that, but an INVOL change is an INVOL change so EC261 applies.

Still depends on the airline. Some airlines will allow you to extend the trip after the validity ends. While other will say that you can do it till end of schedule. It might not be completely compatible with EU 261 but to make them go past the validity would push you to take legal action.

Indeed, it can be fixed with a reissue -- what I intended to say is, I think that's where this idea of a twelve month rule comes from.

The Live Chat on the Finland site was really hard for me, it was so easy before but I was able to change it to the end of October via the UK site.

The Finnish Live Chat told me that I have to rebook in the original departure and destination, even thought my ticket has been rebooked in MUC-HKG already for about 2 times. I then asked her, what should I do if I already flown one of the flights and then she replied back that she would have to consult with her supervisor!!! She also said that this policy has been approved by her supervisor and there is no need to escalate the issue to the upper level! She told me to accept the new flights (still MUC-HKG) that have been rebooked for me or get the full refund!!!
