Ahh yes, that makes sense. I'm assuming that O was required to book, but it may just be a good barometer of the actual availibility and not a requirement. One thing that's interesting is UA seems to indicate mileage upgrades on NH cannot be done earlier than 8 weeks before departure, but we had no problems pushing it through; definitely not complaining

You inspired me to keep checking in the absence of my "O" alert ^

Anyone have insight on upgrading Y > J? Stuck in Y on one of my legs (SYD-HND). ANA is showing only waitlist availability and don't want to transfer points only to not have any space free up. 3 tickets on the res.

What fare class is necessary ton upgrade Y > J? Any insight on when (if ever) ANA typically opens availability up? Doubt it, but would I have better luck with a *A upgrade?

Current breakdown: J9 C9 D9 Z4 P0 R0 G7 E1 Y9 B9 M9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 L9 K9 N2

I don't think it's a mistake, ANA is quite generous with booking classes for *A upgrades:

How much time is everyone leaving for positioning flights? On my return, I'm only leaving 2.5 hours, hoping that is enough

On the way there, I plan about 18 hours, because it's easy, and I can go out in YVR.

This might be a silly question but does the ticket have to be booked on UA.com in order to process Star Alliance upgrade using UA points? Is it possible to request upgrade on UA.com with a booking made on NH site?

Update: Answer is Yes! Found the Star Alliance upgrade request page on UA.com.

Thanks for your tip! My booking is still "purchased, not ticketed" so need to call back NH to complete the transaction. Got the email from NH yesterday. Kudos to ANA, and thank you to OP!

I checked the ANA site for F award availability and there was nothing for my date. Not sure if award availability is same as upgrade inventory though.

24 hours for the position and on the return on the next morning, but then I don't fly straight back home so it doesn't really matter for me where I stay.

My overall plan so far is to fly off to another Aussie city/town as soon as I get to SYD. Come back to SYD 3-4 days before my departure back to HND. Any recommended SPG or Marriott properties in SYD?
