Marriott San Francisco

Stayed there a couple of weeks ago...CLOSED. I could not believe it. That CL was always busy. I asked about a breakfast coupon and got nothing, as a Platinum! I will not be staying there anymore.

Cyrstal Gateway Marriott Memorial Day weekend, lounge closed from Friday noon to Monday evening. Did not ask for or receive breakfast coupons but on receiving our checkout on Monday morning found that breakfast on Sunday had been comped for all of us 2 adults, 2 children. (Saturday we had eaten elsewhere) We immediately changed our plans on Monday and ate in the hotel before heading to the airport.^

Airport? You mean you didn't ride into town on your Hog? My bet is that you were probably one of the few without a bike at the hotel.

I think the entire hotel was occupied by eighth grade school trips and bikers aside from us.

So how would we have it? Many of us enjoy the weekday perks when on business travel - presumably, in many cases, someone else is picking up the tab.

On weekends, how would you like paying something between the current weekend rates and the regular weekday rates? Worth a "free grab"? I think not.

The argument about comparability between chains, as pointed out before, is not absolute. Many Starwoods, for instance, have no lounges. Some Marriotts over perks throughout the weekends - i.e. a few have lounge access, free internet, discounts in the restaurant, free movies, etc.

For MY money (and I stay almost exclusively on weekends), Marriotts are a great value on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Maybe some of the perks are gone, but the rates are down as well. When business can support higher rates, perhaps the perks will return.

For me - and I suspect for others as well - there is nothing wrong with the current situation. Everyone is entitled to "shop around," of course, and I'm certain there are great deals to be had elsewhere from time to time.

For myself, and others, I will continue to have great stays at the properties listed above and others and will continue to earn points. I recently turned in 70,000 points for a value reward worth four nights at the Royal Aurora in Moscow - $900 per night rack rate. It featured a fantastic lounge but, whoops, no oatmeal or hot dishes at breakfast. (Remember - it was only introduced and always promised to be no more than a continental breakfast.)

This "debate" will never be resolved; there will never be a meeting of the minds. We will each do what works for us best. I simply feel obliged to give my view from time to time to counter the naysayers who seem to dominate the postings.

And,as usual, the points above are off the mark.

Glad you had a nice stay in Moscow(a point you keep rehashing in your loyal defense of the MR program)but that has nothing to do with what is being discussed here.

The rates are down because folks are not staying at FS MI properties.
Rather than meet this chalenge by exceeding guests expectations as some chains are attempting to do, Marriott has taken this as an opportunity to further cut back on the benefits of their customer loyalty program.I think these cuts would have happened regardless of the economic slow down-they began cutting back when the economy was going wild-but the down turn in business just gave them an excuse to push these cuts through.

You are correct about there not being a meeting of the minds with those of us that are calling MI on their lousy decissions and the few apologist left around here who no problem with the decline of the once fine Marriott Rewards program.

rln - Ain't that the truth!

To paraphrase Lincoln: "You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not please all of the people all of the time."

Bristol City Centre (UK)

Stayed here 16-19 May. The CL was closed (locked) Saturday and all day Sunday. Re-opened for drinks Sunday evening and closed again on Thursday night. I was really annoyed with them locking it, all the other UK Marriott's who have stopped weekend service have merely stopped doing fresh stuff, but you can still get fruit, soft drinks and coffee, nuts snacks. That is fair.

I wa stold by reception when I said it was not good that all Marriotts are going to lock the lounges on weekends. Personally, as a Plat through leisure stays only I am furious. OK, we have three weeks holiday a year and get use if we stay at a hotel with a CL, but what about all the weekend stays we have???? I pointed out that providing access for business travellers meant that the people who benefited (in the main, don't shoot me down I am sure lots of you are self-employed) were on expense stays anyway so probably could claim for a certain amount of refreshment, whereas we are on a tight budget, so having the convenience and availability of odd food and drink items is great and why we maintain Plat.

I hope Bristol re-consider (I am writing a strong letter about this and other things that spoilt the stay) as it is a great CL.

Actually Hartleypig you have a raised a more serious point. That being the lounges closure on Friday.
I would write the GM a VERY direct letter and CC it to Marriott Rewards and Mr. Marriotts office.
This action violates the terms of the MR program(diminishing)Elite benefits and you are due compensation and the hotel management need to be called on the carpet and spanked.

zacktravel May 29, 2009 1:19 pm

I hope Marriott understands that they are losing business both from the economic situation we are in and from people staying with their competitors. MR has been very stingy lately, promos are much weaker than competition, no breakfast or lounge in most cases on weekend, and HSIA cost seems to have increased in many properties from 9.95 and 12.95 to 12.95 and 14.95 per day (noon to noon). I for one still travel as much as I always have and have shifted my stays away from MR. Although I understand they are struggling, they need to understand that profits do not grow or stay stable if the top line (revenue) is going away. Maybe I should short their stock

JW Marriott or Hyatt Gainey Ranch?

Moved.

hartleypig May 30, 2009 2:38 am

Thanks bigguuyinpasadena, in my rage I had forgotten about Mon-Fri lounge access. We weren't actually there on a Friday night, but it is still more ammunition for my letter!

aaupgrade May 30, 2009 7:51 am

Hartleypig,

So the lounge was closed on Thursday evening. I think Bigguy may have interpreted the lounge being closed on Thursday night with the lounge also being closed Friday morning. Was the lounge open Friday morning? If not did they provide you breakfast coupons?

Unfortunately Marriott makes their rules sufficiently ambiguous in the T&Cs on their web site that the hotels can pretty much twist them into justifying their actions. In that regard, thank you hartleypig for pointing out this hotel so we can avoid it, and also for following up your stay with a letter to corporate about this situation.

Guaranteed Concierge/Executive Club Lounge* access applies to regular hours of operation at Marriott hotels, JW Marriott hotels and Renaissance hotels worldwide. For Marriott hotels, JW Marriott hotels or Renaissance hotels without a Concierge/Executive Club Lounge or if the Lounge is closed, the guest is entitled to receive a free Healthy Start Breakfast, Monday through Friday.
So just what are "regular hours of operation"? They are not defined anywhere in the T&Cs as best I can tell. So if the hotel's lounge is regularly closed on Thursday nights is that considered to be following the rules? Not in my mind.
