Cheers.

Well, I hate to say this but they certainly might do so, inasmuch as those that buck the memo are permanently embalzoned in this thread.

Perhaps it is not such a good idea to advise which hotels are following their own path and instead have members expect nothing on weekends only to be pleasantly surprised that the lounge is open or they get certs for breakfast. @:-)

Update on Tuesday Morning London time with changes bolded, either correct info or additional clarification:

I am at the County Hall right now. The lounge is open 7 days a week. Breakfast is the strong offering with cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheese, rolls, small muffins, Activia yogurt, small shot glasses of yogurt, pastries, 5 fruit juices, fresh fruit and cereal. You must ask the lounge attendant for toast since they do not put that out, but sliced bread is available. The appetizers and dessert are a bit on the weak side. Frankly, the Tysons Corner Marriott has a slightly better offering even after they downgraded it than the current County Hall spread (for everything from breakfast to desserts). Tysons Corner is a bit ahead in breakfast (no smoked salmon, but they have oatmeal and scrambled eggs) and has at least cookies and brownies, whereas County Hall has only one item for dessert each day, besides the regular bowl of fruit.

Ok, my first day on Saturday had rather weak appetizers since they did not include the usual pastries rolls filled with meat, fruit and vegetable. Those are fairly tasty, and they started appearing Sunday evening. Do not expect much dessert at this hotel. They usually have some kind of English cake, brownie, or small piece of eclair.

The lounge has two small fridges for non-alcoholic drinks. The juice bottles need a metal cap opener, which is only available from the attendant. The soda cans, water and juice bottles are all smaller than what is offered in the States. The lounge also has a bathroom, behind the first door you see when you enter the lounge. You open that door, and there is a small space with some coat hangers and another door that leads to the bathroom.

I like the early hours (breakfast starts at 6 am every day) and the extra fresh fruit available throughout the day. There is a free computer to use for internet and paid wireless in the lounge. I signed up for the Boingo global package and have no problem logging in my room or in the lounge(wireless signal, the wired one doesn't work in the room). However, the plan has a limit of 2,000 minutes per month (and this limits applies to usage in the States for the month you use the global plan). So, I am rationing my use in the room.

FWIW, the internet charges from the hotel are: 15 pounds per day or 75 pounds per week. The hotel charges 1.95 pounds for all toll free calls, so the paid internet might be worth it if you want to use Skype a lot in your room (even if it is to call toll free numbers). My impression is that you have to pay that charge if you call your credit card company collect from your room. They have minibars in the room, and they will charge if you even move something, so do not stick anything inside. Refrigerators are available for 10 pounds a day.

Question on a weekday (Thanksgiving) holiday and lounges

If a lounge is supposed to be open but its a holiday like thanksgiving which is on a weekday.. and that lounge is closed due to low occupancy, holiday or for whatever reason...

is the property required to provide b/f certs?

VA1379 Nov 2, 2009 5:55 pm

Yes, the hotel must provide breakfast certificates for any weekday holidays when the lounge is closed.

Cairo Marriott - lounge open 7 days a week, 6AM to midnight. ^

Full hot breakfast offering plus all of the "continental" stuff. Evening spread always included two hot dishes plus vegetables and rice. You could practically eat dinner there if you chose.

Only downside: beer and wine were insanely expensive, even by Marriott lounge standards.

The lounge was a bit crowded at peak times but we were always able to get a table.

JW Marriott Miami - lounge closed on weekend, but breakfast coupons provided! Lounge open on Thanksgiving!
Free wine/beer during evening hours.

Marriott Hunt Valley Inn - Baltimore, Maryland (northern suburbs)

Cheerfully providing breakfast coupons day before Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving day due to Concierge Lounge being closed for very low hotel occupancy (12%!!!)

As an aside, while I know this is proper procedure, I also know that there are some FS properties who might try to "weasel out" of this obligation during these difficult economic times. The Marriott Hunt Valley Inn is a very nice hotel with wonderful UPBEAT staff, always free HSIA, and LARGE ROOMS, and I recommend it highly for anyone needing a business or leisure hotel in the Baltimore (north) area. I have stayed here multiple times, and always enjoy my stay!

Thanks for the heads up - good to know. Cheers.

^ Glad to see that there are some hotels out there that get it. If you're going through a period of light demand, it's more important than ever to make the guests you do have feel welcome. Why so many Marriotts are going 180 degrees the opposite direction I have no idea.

It is the old story of some businesses, with big picture management, know about having to spend money to make money even when spending that money is cash flow negative and hurts in the short run and makes the quarter look bad but the long term and the year look good.

However, other businesses, with narrow picture management, say they can't afford to spend money to make money because the cash flow will be negative, the short term and quarter will suffer, and the long term will suffer too.

Cheap is cheap, bad management is bad management, and blowing off the cream of the crop best customers who make up anywhere from 25-35% of core business because of not providing core services/benefits is just plain ESTUPIDO!

Yes, and quite a nice spread.

Eggs, bacon, 2 types of sausage, hash browns, omelets, nice selection of fruits, cereal, yogurt, breads and pastries for breakfast.

In the evening hot items were Cajun chicken, salmon, ham and pineapple, and mushrooms, plus individual serving dishes of seared and chilled sesame crusted tuna, cooked and chilled mussels (I think), and 1 other item. To be quite honest after I saw the tuna I just wasn't interested in anything else. A nice assortment of breads and fruit in the evening too. Cocktails, beer and wine are available free of charge.

This lounge is also a nice size. As I was sitting there this evening I was thinking of the Sydney Harbour Marriott who could definitely use some additional space.
