I've had in-room check-ins at Sheraton hotels in India as a platinum, and the Sky City Marriott Hong Kong as a gold. Makes you feel pretty special :-)
did you have to flash your status or something?

If you have your MR number with your reservation, they know you are coming. Mobile check in may help as well.

Good luck and let us know how it turned out. It is a pretty cool perk.

BTW, if you get the full treatment, including a direct escort to the room from your attendant, it is customary to have some cash ready for a tip.

The first time it happened to me, I was arriving from Thailand and wasn't prepared with local currency. Just FYI

Arriving from Seattle at 8:15 PM on a Tuesday and departing to Taipei 1:25 PM Wednesday. Is it recommended to stay at this property (I've already booked with points) or another Marriott/Starwood property?

Depends a lot on what you are after.

If you just need a crash place for the layover, the SkyCity Marriott is a pretty ideal. Close by the airport and great service.

But if you are looking at spending time outside the hotel during the layover, it is probably better to stay in town.

Is this a new perk? I've been at this hotel three times, though not in a few years, and I never had that kind of treatment as either platinum or gold (my current status).

As mentioned by another poster, depends on your goal. You will not find a much better airport hotel than this property IMO. You are getting in early enough and leaving late enough that you definitely have time to have a good evening in the city so if you want to head into town there are good options there also.

Cant go wrong either way.

We are just lowly golds. However each of the past 3 times we stayed at this hotel, they called the private car once we reported to the hotel counter at the airport. On one occasion we shared the private car which was a mini-van with a family with 2 children. In any case, elites dont need to go to the shuttle.

Then at the hotel entrance the Head Person handles elite guests was waiting for us at the entrance. She then escorted us to our room, and processed the check in at our room. This happened each time.

I dont believe one should tip the escort as she is in a supervisory / managerial position, just as one would not tip a FD manager or a Lounge Manager. Though one may opt to tip the private car driver if one has a ton of bags. For us only having 2 rollers, we have not tipped the driver. In fact the tipping thing did not even occurred in our mind.

Yes, I agree. I saw that comment up thread and thought it was odd and not something that I find typical for this situation and region.

I personally would head into Hong Kong. I've said this before, but with the transfers, especially back to the airport in the morning, I did not find this property that much more convenient than taking Airport Express into the city.

I got this as a Gold as well. It's a nice touch.

If the escort is not handling your bags, I see no reason to tip.

Interesting comments on the tipping. I had 2 staff members with me, escorted from the hotel entrance to my room. They did not strike me as "supervisors or managers", but more of a concierge / hostess type of role.

I got a definite vibe of tip expectation from them, once I was in the room and they had (without any real prompting) gave a short tour/review of the suite.

I can't recall if they carried my bags. I typically would decline an offer anyway, as I am used to keeping them with me and I pack light.

AFAIK Hong Kong salary structure is not based on tipping, of course people don't mind getting $ but I really don't think it's necessary (as we are already paying 10% service charge in our bills).

What are the hours for the club lounge evening spread here? I land at 615pm and hoping to make it to the lounge to check it out before happy hour finishes. Anyone know?
