Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2019)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.
The codes for the new partial packages are:
New Cat 1-4: QP83
New Cat 5: QP91
New Cat 6: QP99
New Cat 7:
The legacy certificates map to the new certificates as such:
Cat 1-5 => Cat 1-4
Cat 6 => Cat 1-4
Cat 7 => Cat 5
Cat 8 => Cat 5
Cat 9 => Cat 6
Tier 1-3 => Cat 6
Tier 4-5 => Cat 7

If you are unsure where you will use your 7 night stay, when you request the package, just ask for a category 1-5 hotel. That way you are out of the least number of points. If later, you decide to book for a higher level category, then you can do so and pay the difference the travel package points. If you can't use your certificate within the year, then as close to the one year anniversary (without going over!) call to extend the certificate for one more year. That's as long as they will typically allow, one extension. There is an option to expedite the mileage delivery to within three business days (sometimes faster) for $15. There are reports that this fee may be waived for platinum members.
Effective April 1 2017 re: Southwest & the companion pass:
"Purchased points, points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, and e-Rewards, e-Miles, Valued Opinions and Diners Club, points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment, tier bonuses, flight bonuses, and partner bonuses (excluding points bonuses earned on the Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase) do not count toward Companion Pass."

The hotels state their new Categories..but the prices are strange...cannot figure out a consistent pattern. Hopefully to be clarified soon.

People...Marriott laid out an internal timeline for when today's changes would be complete. If you missed it (it was leaked to at least 1 blog) it will essentially take ALL DAY for the changes to be complete.
Don't freak out either way about anything you see until probably tomorrow.

Going to the SPG site I see properties that have dropped to category 4 and when I put in a 7 night stay request the total for the 7 nights is 149,996 so its oretty much spot on for a new cat 1-4 TP with a value of up to 25k per night and 5th night free.

If you currently have a Travel Package Certificate that’s not yet attached to a hotel reservation, you have the following options:
- If you know when you want to travel, make a new reservation or attach your certificate to an existing one prior to August 18, 2018.
- If you are still trying to plan that perfect trip, you can hold onto the certificate and will be able to ADD it to a reservation starting September 18, 2018."
In this communication, where does it say that there will be a "conversion" of your certificate? You will be able to ADD your old certificate to a reservation based on the new chart and with similar value. A 270K point certificate is not similar in value to new 360K point reservation.
Time to forget about what category certificate you had. The point value of your certificate is all that matters going forward.

You're wrong, but it's not good. From the SPG thread posted by Starwood Lurker IV. Regardless of how one feels about this conversion chart, I find it inexcusable that Marriott knew what they were going to do and didn't announce it in advance.

Here's a question: What are you going to do for the people holding category 6, 8, and Tier 1-3 certificates who are holding instruments that cost them more than the now equally valued certificates they could have obtained for categories 1-5, 7, and 9, respectively?

Will the abilities to both Extend the certificate for a year, and to Upgrade/Downgrade categories when needed, be retained? These are key features of the previous certificates.

Does this mean those who paid Cat 8 will have the same redemption as those who paid for Cat 7 packages?
Does this mean that those who paid Tier 1 to 3 will have the same redemption as those who paid for Cat 9 packages?
This doesn't seem fair unless Cat 6 receive 30k point refunds, and Cat 8 and Tier 1 will also receive the extra points paid.
CAT 1-5 was 270k in old program
CAT 6 was 300k in old program
Now for the new program , both CAT 1-5 and Cat 6 will have the same redemption?

More questions:
What are you going to do for members who were assured by your telephone agents at the time of purchasing their travel package that they would be refunded the points value of 150k points for a cat 1-5 certificate?
Or for those members who were told by your telephone agents that the travel packages would work with the same category numbers in the new program (so a cat 1-5 certificate would work for cats 1-5 in the new program)?
What are you going to do for members who were assured by your telephone agents at the time of purchasing their travel package that they would be refunded the points value of 150k points for a cat 1-5 certificate?
Or for those members who were told by your telephone agents that the travel packages would work with the same category numbers in the new program (so a cat 1-5 certificate would work for cats 1-5 in the new program)?

I have a Cat 8 TP. I would have got a Cat 9, or a Cat 7 if I knew the conversion. It really hurts. I'll just burn all my points and say goodbye to Marriott. Hello Hilton and Hyatt!
