Property: Fullerton Marriott at California State University
Stay: 2 nights (first time) Greeting: Welcome as a platinum member. Room Upgrade: Initially none was pre-blocked, but I called the PP reservation line and got moved up to a concierge level room. This property doesn't have many suites or rooms with views, so it is probably the best upgrade you can expect. The upgrade should be automatic for PP and platinum members. Suite Upgrade: no Special requests: Got a refrigerator after I asked the PP reservation line to request it for me. Other: This is actually a good property for platinum members since they get free internet (they use Merlot so no Boingo roaming at this property) /WFB which would cost $9.95/day otherwise. Breakfast is also free for platinum members on weekends (hours are 6 am to 10 am - note that these hours are early compared to East Coast properties which usually start breakfast at 7 am on the weekends). The CL opens for breakfast at 6 am and that runs to 10 am (again about 30 minutes earlier than most CL in East Coast hotels). The gym is pretty good in the cardio area (Precor with individual tv monitors). The weights area is weaker (a few machines and dumbbells). The gym is probably a bit above average for a FS Marriott but nothing like most Hyatt hotels or Marriott properties that give discounted/free gym passes to nice gyms outside of the hotel. |
Tale of two properties here.
Property: Marriott Heidelberg, Germany Length of stay (repeat stays?): 3 nights (first stay) Greeting: No specific mentioning of being PP or Plat but did receive amenity sheet Room upgrade: No Suite upgrade: No Special requests filled: No, requested early check-in for 11am and "my room" wasn't available (see other for additional details) Other: Upon checking in the clerk said my room wasn't available on the executive level (which I booked the rate for) and that he had a room of the same size on the second floor and I would get access to the Exec Lounge. Upon getting into the room I noticed the "river view" was flat pane windows just above the roof line of the restaurant so while I had a limited river view, the first 20 feet was gravel roof. I also noticed that the majority of rooms had bay windows of which I did not have. I called down to ask why I received a non-executive room when I was told that they were having a conference that week and all the exec level rooms were already "assigned". Of course I asked how as a PP all the exec rooms were assigned to other guests before me (especially since I had booked that room type). He danced around the subject and then passed me off to his colleague who I later realized was the manager. About 4 hours later she had a corner Executive Level room with a balcony available for me which was significantly better then the original room I booked. While everything ended well, I was a little irritated I had to go through the process to get what I booked in the first place. Property: Marriott Frankfurt, Germany Length of stay (repeat stays?): 1 night (first stay) Greeting: "Thank you for being one of Marriott's top guests" Room upgrade: Yes, junior suite, high floor Suite upgrade: Yes, junior suite Special requests filled: High Floor Other: Upon check-in, I not only received the regular amenity choices but she also had another selection sheet that she said as a PP I was entitled to which inlcuded either an additional 500 points, a cheese plate, or a "Taste of Frankfurt" consisting of a beer and some local bratwurst and crackers. Definitely a nice touch. The Exec Lounge at this property was also very nice and had a wonderful evening snack selection. |
Property:Marriott Paris Rive Gauche

Property: Renaissance Eden Roc Miami Beach Length of stay (repeat stays?): 1 night on points/repeat Greeting:Thank you for being a PP member Room upgrade:Yes Suite upgrade:Yes, to a corner suite in the Ocean Tower with great views of the pool and ocean. Special requests filled: none requested Other: The champagne and chocolate covered fruit on the amenities list is a nice touch. |

Inconsistent Carryover
I wanted to see if anyone else was in my scenario. I stayed 125 nights in 2009 and was Platinum Premier. I only rolled over 25 nights. When I called they said that Platinum Premier only rolled over nights above 100 - made sense at the time.
I just received in the mail my 2010 rewards packet and they informed me that I didn't qualify for Platinum Premier again but am regular platinum. That being said, if I didn't quality for Platinum Premier, shouldn't they have rolled over 50 nights instead of 25 since I dropped a level? This doesn't make sense to me. I plan to give them a call but wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts on this as it doesn't make sense to me. Please reply if you have 2 cents to add.. |
For all standard elite status we have X nights requirement to satisfy each year. If we stay more we rollover the excess. If we don't acheive that requirement we are busted down a level for the following year. Since we only rollover nights in excess of our requirement whenever we're busted down we won't rollover since the prerequisite for busting down is failure to meet the requirement and the prerequisite for rollover is stays in excess of requirement.
So far so logical... All that goes out of the window with PP, since the requirement for qualification is unpublished imponderables, only one of which is nights stayed. Thus Marriott fixed the rule that PP's can rollover any nights in excess of 100. That is therefore your "requirement". Since you achieved in excess of your annual status "requirement" you rolled over 25 nights, but when the number crunchers dealt with the rest of the unpublished imponderables connected with this status you failed to make the grade and hence were busted down, but with a rollover. Hence the wholly artificial proposition where a PP can fail to retain status yet can still rollover excess nights!! |

Property: JW Marriott Los Angeles at L.A. Live
Stay: 1 night (first time) Greeting: Thank you for being the first-ever platinum premier member to stay at our hotel! (They had been open four days when I checked in...) Room Upgrade: Concierge floor was pre-blocked but the lounge is closed on the weekend, so when I asked about other upgrades at check-in I was moved to a junior suite on a lower floor. Suite Upgrade: Yes, junior suite (really just a larger room--no separate bedroom or anything). Special requests: N/A Other: The first junior suite they booked me into was on the 9th floor but construction actually hadn't been completed in the room. Some furniture was missing, and there were only blinds on one of the wall of windows. They then moved us to a similar room on the 17th floor, which was fine. But I have to wonder why, if "high floor room" is on my standing profile, they didn't just give me the higher-floor room to start with?! |

That was above and beyond service |
Property: Marriott Heidelberg, Germany
Length of stay )5 nites, many over the years Greeting: Welcome to Mrriot - thanks for being a PP Room upgrade: Yes to CL level Suite upgrade: No Other - CL mgr got me Nutella to go when I mentioned how my daughter in law loved the real german kind and I did not have time to go to grocery store. The next morning he brought in a bunch of those prepacks and told me to take them with me. Had issues with using BB but it was resolved |
The second here will take some beating. If this continues, I think I'm going to enjoy being PP and make sure I stay at enough Marriotts to maintain the status. Hang on a minute isn't that why they dish it out in the first place? ;)
