Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Definitely don't count on your ambassador for this. You are better off contacting the UK line yourself and following the script.

Well it looked so promising until it didn't.

Called in, first agent transferred me to someone in the loyalty department who got it right away, but ran into trouble redeeming the old 950T certificate and couldn't get past that block. She said that she sent a message to a "program manager" to get this fixed as well as to my Ambassador.

I think this might be one of these situations where having an Ambassador might be negative value, because she's already told me she thinks it can't be done, so now I look like I'm going around her (which is not ideal, but is also what I'm doing given what I want to do should be doable and allowed)

I have just tried to attach my NC6 certificate to a booking (NC5) - but was told that this wasn't possible and that it needed to be a Cat 6 hotel... is this correct?? Or is it a case of HUCA?

I am waiting for the week after the July 4th holiday so that I can extend the cert to cover all the major holidays till summer of 2020. Plan to use one of the OC9 -> NC6 over the Xmas holidays but if that plan falls through, I need the ability to have the cert to be valid as long as possible.

I called the UK line four times this afternoon to convert 870 to QP91, but was declined four times after I told the representative to cancel the OC and order the NC at the refund value.

Frustrated, I called the US elite line. The representative had no clue what the certificate is. The representative asked me to wait on the line. Even after telling the representative numerous times that I only wanted QP91, the representative came back with a converted QP83. I got very upset and requested to speak to a supervisor. Fortunately the supervisor helped me cancel the QP83 and ordered a QP91 for me.

Got shot down hard by a US Titanium line agent saying "We are only allowed to convert 950T into QP91 -- this is the company policy I have"

Are there any other Marriott call centers worth trying other than US or UK?

Is that possible?

Looking for a European-based redemption suitable for a family of four in late October... The two hotels that I was looking at were both Category 5 - plus have now arranged flights!

Hi all - quick question - I have a 7 night certificate expiring 09/13/2019. I am trying to make a reservation using this certificate for a booking in Feb 2020. Is that allowable? I am on the phone with a CS and she is telling me that the certificate cannot be attached to any reservation that is past the expiration date.

And good luck on converting an OC8 to a NC8. Please post the result of your call.
I have not intent on "converting" to an "upgrade"

The stay has to be finished by the expiration date of the cert.

Try to get an extension of the cert first. Like wait till late Aug/early Sept to ask for a one year extension. I knew earlier this year a friend was able to extend her NC for another year.

I have a slightly different experience. I have an email chain from before the transition from a Marriott supervisor that implied my OC8 would allow me to at least book a specific NC6 even after the transition.

Over the last month or so I have been trying to get someone to honor that and finally someone escalated it and opened a case and I was told I should have a resolution within 5 business days. 10 Business days later and not hearing anything I reached out again and then got a response there is no timeline on a response, which made me nervous as the cert was going to expire in a few weeks.

I then got an email from someone that was assigned the case and they said sorry its expiring you can get a refund. I reached back out and politely asked if he could cancel the original 950T certificate and apply the refund and an additional 30K it to a QP99 which my understanding would extend the current certificate. I was not expecting it to work... but got an email a couple days later reconfirming the new category 6 reservation and a follow up from the CSR confirming he took care of it. Was pleasantly surprised.

Well, crap…

So after the 5th HUCA, I found a very nice agent on the UK line who was willing to help only to find out he doesn't have the right access to do it. Apparently he says I have a "five star" account and only my Ambassador can get it done. My account is locked to regular support.
I guess this is one thing where having Ambassador status is actually detrimental.

Thanks. I HUCA'd and was able to get a rep who assured me an extension of the expiration was available. She advised exactly as you suggested, to wait till closer to the expiration date to make the change. Much appreciated!

The rules might be different for travel certificates, but Marriott told me that customers need to wait until annual credit card "free" nights are within 30 days of expiration before they can be extended. Unless someone is planning to use the certificates soon after the current expiration, I would expect most people would wait until the last month to call anyway.
