Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

MARRIOT UK: +44 20 7012 7312

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

Hi, do I need to make a booking with points first in order to use / attach a Travel Package certificate to a hotel?

I don't have enough points in my account but the system seems to be ok with that, I am quoted $25 though in taxes and fees. Would I get those refunded in case I need to cancel my reservation? Thanks

You can make the reservation first and then attach the travel package later. I just called to do it at the same time with the rep.

And I think the taxes are refundable if you cancel w/in the cancellation policy. I don't even believe you are charged until you check out of the hotel if otherwise staying.

So is it even theoretically feasible to upgrade the old cat5 5-night package to one of the new cat7s, or such a SKU doesn't even exist?

The conversion and attachment can all be on the same phone call.

People have been doing that the past 3 weeks already if you read this thread (and the old, closed thread). Just read back a few pages would show you that.

Call UK number you have far less wait and more competent agents.

Did you call UK or another European number?
Sorry, just saw the message. It was a lovely woman with a French accent. I don't remember the exact number.

Is it the consensus to call and convert old certs to new certs as late as possible to extend it by another year?

Rebooking an award stay with a pre-Aug cert

please bear with a newbie question, and thanks in advance

i grabbed a cat 7 package, and attached the cert to a reservation. my gf and i decided to shift our dates by 1 night forward (10/29 to 10/30)
called cust svc, was asked to email the booking desk for the hotel directly, which i did. i mentioned the cert, and asked to make sure nothing changes with the cert.

this morning, the hotel made the change, however we then received an email about the cert being cancelled. i emailed the hotel, was told that the certificate is intact, and given a cert # (which was different than the original). i also called rewards, and was also told that there is a cert attached.

when i look on the marriott website, i see the below in the activity:

7 Night Travel Package Category 7 Hotels, 09/17/2018, Cancelled 105,000 Rewards +105,000

Partial Package - 7 Nights Category 5, 09/17/2018, Ordered -105,000 Rewards -105,000

Standard Redemption Rate 09/17/2018, Cancelled 0 Rewards +0

what does Partial Redemption mean?

and when i go to My Trips, and click Order reward Certificate for this reservation, it says the new room total is 210K points, instead of original 105K

so, what to make of this? is the cert attached properly? last thing i wanna do is show up and get a partial room bill or somet

Partial redemption means this is for the hotel only (the full redemption has 2 components - airline miles and the hotel stay cert).

Because of the date change, the cert is canceled then is reordered.

The reservation SHOULD show an eCert has been ordered. i.e. it should not still ask you to order an eCert, or even allow you to order cert (at regular redemption rate as in the point cost of 6 nights with 1 night free).

You also should have received 2 confirmation emails - one related to the cancellation of the old cert, the other related to the reordering the new cert (with a new number).

Marriott system now seems only sends out confirmation email when the reward is paid for. If the reward does not have a cert attached (whether it is thru regular point redemption or thru travel package, it is all related to as eCert), then the system would not generate a confirmation email for the booking.

The reservation now with new dates, SHOULD also generate a reservation confirmation email AND on that it should show the total cost is 105K pts.

If you haven't receive such a confirmation email, call reservation to request one sent to you.
You would need this as a proof should the system fails somewhere.

What does the hotel reservation show online? Has or Has not, a eCert for the reservation?

Today, I noticed in my account that the unattached OC5 TP that I purchased Aug 16 expires June 6. Have there been other instances of the TP showing expiry dates of less than a year? I am certain it was not confused with other TPs as all of my TPs were purchased in late July or early to mid August.

I considered emailing my ambassador about this to have it fixed but currently do not have a hard plan for my TP and would rather push out the expiry date as long as possible (early October 2019) as I have somewhat of a busy travel year next year due to other TPs. If my ambassador fixes it now, I assume he will convert it to a NC4 which sets the expiry date earlier than I would prefer.

I have been out of the loop on TPs the last month but reading now, it appears that there is nothing really to be gained trading an OC5 for a NC4 - no upgrades are possible and/or points back like the great OC8 to NC6 deal, right? I would love to upgrade to a NC5 if possible with only 30K points, but that just isn't possible; is that correct?

I also hold an OC6 which is currently attached to a NC4 hotel. I am wondering if I can swap TPs. That is - the following:

1. Detach my OC6 from my NC4 reservation
2. Attach my currently-a-free-agent OC5 to that NC4 reservation that the OC6 was attached to
3. Convert my OC6 that was just detached from the reservation to a NC5 using advice listed here
4. Attach my new NC5 to a new NC5 reservation

Am I wrong or am I gaining net 60K doing this? Versus 30K gain by just asking for a OC6 to NC4 conversion . . .

But:
a) If I detach my OC6 from a reservation, does it automatically convert before I can ask for the 30K refund at that time?
b) Have I harmed my NC4 reservation by detaching the certificate (I don't think so)?
c) Am I too late to even try this and the OC6 to NC5 deal is over?
d) Am I making this more complicated than I need to?

I also hold:
- an OC7 which is attached to a NC5 reservation so I think nothing should be done to that?
- an OC8 which is attached to a NC5 so I think I still need to get the 30K refund? Would love to try the OC8 to NC6 trick but we actually really want to stay at the hotel it is attached to so I think no point in trying?
- an OC9 which is attached to Domes of Elounda so I think I should not touch it?

Thanks for any feedback.

Currently weighing whether to convert my OC8 and forcing it to expire one year from now...

That depends on what I can do with my other OC5. If I have nothing urgent, is the best policy to hold off on converting OC5 -> NC4 until right before my OC5 cert is due to expire?

Well, I believe today's the day the moratorium (or whatever it was) ends and all should be operating smoothly. Has anyone seen any changes?

No. My account still shows my old package: "P570 PARTIAL PKG-CAT 6".

Haha, I'm sure that's who I spoke to too (on the UK number).

Marriott hotel availability has now opened up for my dates so I've held a points booking (handy being able to do so without points!) that I can attach the cert to if unable to use it with either SPG property.

Overall has been a hassle but for 330k Marriott points to get 7 weeks cat 5 + 132k UA miles still a good deal.

Tier 4-5 package use

I had a Tier 4-5 package in my account. I have a St Regis Bora Bora paid refundable reservation for a reefside villa in my account too. I have spoken to multiple agents both SPG and Marriott. None of them are able to apply the certificate to the reservation. Any thoughts?
