Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

If my certificate were valid that long I would have kept it to use during New Years 2019 myself. It expired in September 2019 and your certificate expiry date must be after the date of your stay. It's not as though I burned this thing for 165k points without thinking about it. I've already planned all my travel through until the end of 2019 and it just ended up that 165k points would actually lower my total spend more than the certificate would, and would put me in a much nicer hotel than the certificate would.

I guess you could ask why I converted it so early rather than waiting. It's an upgraded OC8 and it was getting harder and harder to find reps to do it, so I went for it thinking I would use it for a stay in February.

I have an old OC8/NC5 and I am in a bit of a dilemma as I do not know whether to upgrade it or take the rebate. If possible could anyone clarify if the following is correct:

1) Upgrading to NC6 from OC8 will cost 60k points
2) If I upgrade the date will be extended
3) If I accept the NC5 from OC8 I will recieve a 30k rebate but no extension.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

NC5 to NC6 should be a difference of 30k if I'm understanding the wiki correctly.

And converting from OC to NC should automatically extend the cert by one year. I think there was only one instance where the cert wasn't extended.

Finally got mine applied to Westin Melbourne, although in a crappy single/twin internal room - really hope to get something more decent allocated by the time I arrive. Website still says eCertificate required but Marriott Corporate have assured me they have attached it correctly and to ignore the message. Still waiting (two months on) for a reply to my other complaints re this saga - pretty dreadful CS and has put me off using Marriott much going forward, despite having used SPG quite a bit in the past.

Hi! Wanted to post a data point since this thread has been so helpful to me! In September, I was able to upgrade my Old Category 6 to a New Category 5 seven night certificate for no extra points, even though I thought I was going to have to pay 30k. You can find my post on that experience on this thread. That upgrade gave me a new certificate with an expiration of September 19. However, I wanted to travel to Kauai for my 5 year wedding anniversary at the end of October. I called Marriott earlier this week to apply my certificate to the Sheraton Kauai for 10/19 - 10/26 and the rep said everything was good and complete. But based on this thread, I could tell that I had a points reservation, but that my certificate was not attached. I just called back tonight and explained the situation and the rep said we can cancel your current certificate and re-order the same certificate, so it will have an expiration of 1 year from today. I was VERY nervous about doing that but he assured me everything would be fine. A few minutes later he came back and said I have a new category 5 certificate with an expiration of 12/22 and I confirmed it in my account! Then I asked him to attach it to my current reservation and he did that within like 1 minute! I checked my reservation and it now says "This reservation has e-certificate(s). Your Reward certificates will be sent to your hotel." Plus the points balance is 105k, instead of the 210k like it was before!

So I think I am all set! Now I will just call the Sheraton in a few months and try to upgrade my room to something better then a garden view And hopefully SW starts flying to Hawaii soon so I can use my soon to be earned Companion Pass to get there! Thanks again for all of your help and guidance through this process!

I see at least 7 properties for cash, $81-760.
Of those, only ONE has award nights for points.

Thanks for the dp and upgrade story! Are you going to try and call Sheraton to try and get an upgrade with cash/pts or just try to get lucky?

And I just checked my reservation, and shoot mine just asks me to order my certificate since I have enough points. Is it not attached properly?

I have a stay booked pre merge with an OC9 cert attached, the hotel is now NC8. Will I able to amend the dates of the stay, award availability dependent, without the original stay having to be cancelled and therefore unable to attach the now likely converted NC6 cert to it? Been told both yes and no over the phone in 2 calls to Marriott

Any changes to a reservation will normally cause it to reprice, so my best guess is no. Also, modifying your reservation will probably cause your OC9 to be cancelled and refunded. If I was in your situation and I was certain the dates wouldn't work, I would call the hotel and see if a manager could make the adjustment.

Hi, I'm just hoping to get lucky, but I'll probably try and see how much it would cost to upgrade with cash/points. And I don't think your certificate is attached correctly. Mine previously said something about needing/using points before last night, but now the details page has changed.

Technically I was only charged 75,000 points, but I can see in my account that it actually cost 105,000 points. When I was on the phone with the UK trying to upgrade the agent just gave me a bonus 30,000 points to make up the difference. I think I got really lucky!

Thanks, I was afraid that would be the answer! The property is an Auto. Co. resort, I can’t see them manually amending the dates from their end.

I just tried searching those dates and see most properties have availability for points (looking for a room with 2 adults). A couple that do not are mostly Cat 5 properties. Which 6 properties were you wanting to stay in that did not have availability?
