I think we'll do the family car and hope that they decide to take a smaller (read as: "nicer") car for just the two of us. With much too small of a sample size to be called evidence, I've found that if you get the hotel car (and thus the hotel knows you've landed, and are en route), you may get a nicer upgrade allocated by beating the rush.
For the return, we'll asses the condition of the cabs and proceed accordingly. I'm willing to pay $40-50 to be more comfortable for more than an hour if the cabs are all run down.

Agree completely. The family car is excellent, even for 2... and the one I recommend. It's a nice luxury to have a representative from the hotel take care of you and get you there without you having to think about anything. Definitely the way to arrive at this amazing property! Enjoy!!

We took a few excursions during the day and found that it frequently rains on the interior of the island, and much less on the exterior. Our driver said that the trees are planted in such a way to attract rain to the center of the island where the water treatment plant is.

We also used them to do a tour during our stay in the North before moving to the St. Regis and it was great.
Going out with Gino in the Range Rover is FANTASTIC (we did it for 2 days) but it's expensive and not worth it to and from the airport.

I booked 2 rooms for 5 nights each on SPG points. One was upgraded to a Junior suite right on the beach, which I was able to give to my parents.

Me and my girlfriend planning to visit the St. Regis in Noember and want to go windsurfing. On the homepage it says:
"Guests can enjoy complementary activities such as snorkeling, water ski, glass bottom boat, kayaks, wind surfing and pedal boats."
Does anyone has more information about the windsurf equipment? Is it up-to-date and sufficient for advanced surfers?

Advanced windsurfers can rent the newest gear from Club Mistral and beginners can have one on one lessons with professional instructors.

William, thank you so much for the information - so I will rent some stuff at the Mistral Club
Any recommendations regarding a specific room to request? And should we ask for a room on the lower level or on the upper level? I have the feeling, that rooms on the upper level provide more privacy and have a better view.
Thanks!

If privacy is not the most important issues: I'd go for a ground floor room, nothing beats walking from the terrace right to the warm Mauritian waters...

William is right - beginners equipment only at the StR. Think 120l boards and up, foldable fin, smallish sails, etc ... you get the picture. But the biggest issue to me was the shallow water next to the hotel. Go for the Club Mistral. Great equipment, though not always brand new. It's situated right in front of the infamous One Eye, can't get any better if you're a surf pro.
As beachfront as possible. The rooms further away from the beach are facing other villas. The villas right next to the beach are all junior suites, though and thus a bit pricier. Check on google maps and you'll see the layout: https://www.google.de/maps/place/St....ca8ca3fc64351f

Here now. Mixed feelings.
+
The hard product is phenomenal. The manor house suite is huge. The balcony is obscenely large and the room is very convenient. The manor house is the best possible location as it's right next to the pool and the restaurants and steps from the beach. The distant beachfront rooms are really a schlep.
The grounds are gorgeous. It's just a visually stunning resort.

The CS could use some work. People genuinely want to help but there's some minor language barrier issues for English which is odd. Further, things just aren't that polished. I'm constantly asked what my room number is, etc. check in was a bit haphazard, too.
The pricing at watersports for diving and kiting is close to gouge territory. 125 euro for a 2 hour lesson vs 70-90 at the beach 5 mins down the road. Diving is similar in the markup but I suppose they have a captive audience.
Overall, I feel it's totally worth a visit but I'm not sure it's 100 percent a st Regis in terms of experience.
As an aside, I'm unclear on the tipping situation. We're the 7th American guest there in 18 months according to one employee so our tipping culture doesn't seem to be common. However, I want to make sure I'm not under tipping.

As for being the seventh American guest there in 18 months, that's not quite true. When we were there in November, there were three other American couples at the champagne sabering, all SPG Platinum members staying on awards.
We did tip our primary butler at the end of the trip. He was very genuinely surprised and thankful for our gift to him, but he had been incredibly helpful to us throughout the stay.
