As an update, I was able to confirm that there will no longer be Bonvoy redemption opportunities for the property. Additionally, all future bookings, regardless of rate type, must be prepaid and become non-refundable within 24 hours of booking. Further, the property will no longer be part of Amex FHR and will no longer offer rooms with 2 queen beds. Honestly, it is so restrictive that it makes it a bit difficult to confidently plan for a destination so remote!

Hi all,
I‘m planning a 12 day stay with my +1 in MR for Sep/Oct. My plan is to become Bonvoy Platinum during the stay which is why I want to go to a Marriott property.
I‘m unsure between the Westin Turtle Bay and the JWM. I don’t want to split stays though. I will pay in cash and the total rate difference will be around USD 1500, with JWM being the more expensive one. Also, WI includes halfboard while JWM is breakfast only.
Financially, WI seems to be the wiser decision but the beach and landscape of the JWM looks crazy…
I will also have a rental car, since we love to have dinner off resort usually.
Thank you!
EDIT: the current cyclone seems to have severely damaged the JWM according to this online review from 10 hours ago:
The Mariott as such deserves 4 stars, super friendly staff, recommendable massages, very good restaurants, outdoor facilities very nicely laid out, rooms a bit outdated. Now we come to the reason why we only award 1 star: there was a cyclone warning 2 days before, this warning was not taken into account in any way in the hotel, only a few sandbags were placed in front of a few bungalows. 70 percent of the service was stopped and most of the employees were sent home to their families. The situation after the cyclone: total water failure (including WC), most of the bungalows on the water side were no longer habitable, service was discontinued, the tree in front of our entrance was not removed, we had to climb through the dense undergrowth because it felt like the whole complex was deserted, we drew toilet water from a pond using a foot basin. Total chaos, only in the evening were we able to leave the hotel for the sister hotel Lemeridien in the north of the island. There was total chaos here, long waiting times to check in, the beaches in this hotel were not usable at all after the cyclone. We could go into much more detail (including that we were supposed to pay in full for the hotel nights at lemeridien). It is the management's way of dealing with natural disasters.
The hotel management at the Mariott definitely failed completely, especially as there is something like this almost every year here in Mauritius.

I can't speak to the current state of the hotel based on damage. But regarding not wanting to split the stays, that's exactly what I've done on each of my prior visits to Mauritius, and I'd highly recommend it. Five nights at the JW Marriott (back when it was the St. Regis) and five nights at the Westin. I thought that was a great way to go.
First visit was 5 at Westin followed by 5 at St. Regis. Second visit was two years later in the reverse order.

Thank you SEA-Flyer.
Although I generally like the idea of switching hotels, I just want to have a stable base for the full stay since I’m traveling around Asia already a few months before.
Thanks to BRG, I now got a nice rate at the JWM
and decided to go for it completely. It will be my first stay in Mauritius and I will pretty sure not return to the island anytime soon. Therefore, I’m going to spoil +1 and myself a little. 👍

Is there any current status available about the JW conditions after the cyclone?
Also travelling with a kid and a full board booking. Is the child included in the full board? Any experience?

I see points redemption still available for next few months at 64k-65k. Can you please clarify.
Thanks

That is new. For the past few months, there has been zero availability for the upcoming year. I finally reached out directly and was told "we don't accept points reservations", so perhaps Marriott intervened to encourage the change.

Hello, I booked five nights in April, and I see availability pretty much every day. The hotel min is two nights, so you have to search for more than two nights to see availability. Does anyone here have the email for the GM or Operations Manager? We are going for our 10th anniversary and hoping to get an upgrade.
Thank you
Thank you
