I don't see why not. The train goes from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo and also Urubamba. Since you stay at the hotel, I don't know why you couldn't get the train straight to the hotel. We took the train from the hotel to Agues Calientes and back, no problem. Lovely, lovely trip!

Not to dissuade you in any way, I have done this hike with a group. I don't know if it was food poisoning or altitude sickness (our flight into Cusco was delayed by a flight cancellation which shortened our acclimatization) but I may have been in a bit more of a pickle had I not been in a group hike. I made a quick recovery after descending the other side. Would recommend giving yourself 3+ days in Cusco prior to starting.

Appreciate the heads up. We're going to be doing a 2 month long trip with some time in Cusco before. We'll also have Diamox on hand just in case (leftovers from Kilimanjaro earlier this year).

Why are you suggesting this? Cusco has higher altitude than Urubamba or Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu - 2430 m
Urubamba - 2871 m
Cusco - 3400 m

Cusco was the last stop on my trip.

making cusco the last stop would be more appropriate.

Dzigavertov mentioned independantly hiking the Salkantay route to Machu Pichu which reaches around 15K feet/4700 meters. Some can handle this altitude with no problems but acclimatizing in Cusco for a few days is the wise thing to do, especially if arriving from sea level.

I’ve been a number of times including staying at the del Inka when it closed for Covid. I think Urubamba is a good starting place followed by M.P. And then Cusco if you have a week or so. Urubamba can be a bit more relaxed and you can take more time unlike M.P.

Also, I found the Tambo to be just great in a beautiful setting. The owner was fantastic when the restrictions were imposed and transferred us to the Palacio del Inka in Cusco during a two week lock down. Both properties are exceptional.

Thanks for the info everyone. We will be doing a 2 month-ish trip from Quito to La Paz and will be stopping in Cusco (using Peru Hop for LIM-LPB portion). We did Machu Picchu back in 2015 and the salt mines from Cusco. We'd like to do Salkantay since we can do it independently and Rainbow Mountain as a day trip. The Peru Hop bus will drop us in Cusco and pick us up in Cusco however many days later we want, I'm thinking 6-7 days in Cusco for the trek and Rainbow. We've done a good amount of trekking and will have plenty of time to acclimatize, but will have Diamox just in case.

I have never been here before. How close to the town is this hotel?

What is the best way to travel to this hotel from Lima? Car? Airplane? Bus?

Which town do you mean?

It's right in the town of Urubamba.

However, if you mean Cusco, it's 53km, Google maps says it's a 1hr 14min drive.

From Lima you need to fly to Cusco. Then take a car to Urubamba/the hotel. You can book a taxi service for cheap in advance.
