All the VGC and MCGC at my local WMNM were pulled from the racks this week and the associate didn't know when they would return. I"m hoping they replace them quickly, and fingers crossed the new ones still have the $4.94 fee. Anybody else see this happen recently?
The only question I have is when they get replaced, will they have the $6.96 or $7.95 fee instead  Let us know. |
Hope I'm posting in the right thread.
At Walmart I tried using a BHN MCGC to buy an Incomm VGC ( figured I could liquidate it later and eat the fees). Swiped MCGC and enter last four as pin. Got an 'Unable to process' error (at MoneyCenter). Anyone have any tips? |

BHN GC works for $99 max each swipe as debit at CS or Money Center. I am not sure if it works for full amount as credit at Money Center or not. I tried a few months ago at self checkout with Staples VGC's and they worked for full amount of $200 as credit with split payment to buy a $500 Vanilla GC.
Not sure exactly why. Maybe Walmart blocks using a prepaid to buy another prepaid, or BHN blocked it based on the transaction amount like you mentioned. |
Has anyone recently purchased a GC at WM through SCO? I had two failures at different locations this week. Using a $500 BHN VGC to get SS VGC for 1 swipe at $475 - failed. Immediately tried to use a regular CC at SCO but that also failed. CS suggested I try at the MC. At one of them, I then went to a regular checkout and both the BHN and CC each failed. Later successfully used the BHN at DG.
Admittedly, I took a few months off at WM so not sure if this is a recent change. Do all GC have to go through the MC at WM now? I know BHN typically are limited to $99 swipes at the MC for MO but I didn't used to experience that limit at SCO for GC. |
Went to walmart yesterday, GC rack full of VGC vanilla @ 4.95 fee. went today and all gone, only MCGC vanilla, still pathward, but fee is like $6.48.

Thanks. I tested the BHN Mastercard at self-checkout today (different Walmart). Bought a banana, it went through fast as credit, no PIN prompt. Then I tried to buy a VGC, got PIN prompt right away. Tried to press credit, but it didn’t let me. Forced me to enter PIN — then “not authorized.”

uggh, was only a matter of time with all the grocers going to $7.95
I feel like the way all the GC vendors figured out how to stop MSing was to simply make it too expensive to do anymore. To a casual user of the VGC system, making a once a year purchase of a VGC for a $6.48 or $7.95 fee is slightly painful, but it is a gift.... so the person pays it. But if the intent is to make a profit either from points or cashback, then at some point the line is crossed and it is no longer profitable, especially when adding in time and travel considerations. I'm down to OM and Staples GCs when they are on sale. IMO, I haven't done Simon in ages. The rest is bogus :( |

At what point does this become unfeasible?
If you are getting the fee free cards at Staples and getting 5% with Chase Ink Business Cash, then the profit on the purchase of a $500 VGC with $6.48 fee is $25 - $6.48 = $18.52 You're pocketing $18.52 for driving to Walmart and to Staples. If you have a credit card that gives you 5% cashback on Walmart purchases, then the profit on the purchase of a $500 VGC with $6.48 fee is ( $506.48 x 0.05 ) - $6.48 = $23.32 - $6.48 = $18.84 You're pocketing $18.84 for driving to Walmart. |

What card(s) returns 5% at WM? You got my attention.
Just use whatever number is valid for your case. Apparently there are folks with credit cards that are grandfathered. |
yup OBC x 3 still working for 5% at g/g/d. WM only a 3 % Disc Miles for the first year is decent. A 2% card hardly worth it.
|
BTW, BJ club still has Vanilla MC and SSpends @ 5.95 that can be liquidated. Currently, Disc has 5% back at warehouse clubs this Q.,
