So I only bought a single US Bank VGC from Kroger (purple, white, gray) about a week ago. Transaction went through fine and when I call in to check the value on the card it's at $500. I also set the PIN myself to something easy to remember.

When I tried to use it to buy a money order at Kroger OR Walmart all registers rejected it with either "Not Authorized" (Kroger) or "Alternate Tender Accepted." I thought maybe I had incorrectly swiped it with a wrong PIN but when I called the customer service for the card, they stated that I had attempted too many times to use the card with a wrong PIN (even though I had SET the PIN myself!).

They reset the "use" of the card so it was "unlocked." I then tried to buy just some bananas at K and WM and BOTH stores showed the same error message again!

Note that I have been buying OVs for a long time and never had issues liquidating them at K or HT...so I know how the process works. I have basically a useless $500 purple VGC here until I figure where I can spend it. Any ideas on what may be wrong?

Ask for a replacement.

When the card loses debit functionality, you liquidate it via CC.

AP, AFT, or even go to CVS/Kroger/etc. and buy another GC and eat the $5 loss.

thanks guys for the suggestions...

also...is this one of those things where a card every so often "loses functionality"? are kroger / US Bank types less reliable than OVs? i've done quite a few OVs with never this kind of issue before

No. This needs to be liquidated through AP or Evolve.

Same.

And now it looks like they have a diff. type of variable visa there... such as one for hispanics, birthday, etc.

This is true for the Visa GC. From what I've seen at my Kroger all MC's tear from the back and not the side or top. YMMV

Is the deal still on today? I'm going to make a run in about 10 minutes to test. If the deal is off and I shouldn't bother, I would appreciate it if someone would let me know.

I got $5 catalinas today on each of two $20-500 VGC purchases.

Well, not only did the promo start early, but apparently is running past the end date as well. I bought some variable cards this morning and got the $5 coupon.

I bought one variable card this morning and also received a $5 coupon. Wasn't expecting it, just an added bonus now
