If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

Current S&S promo: none

Current Giant (PA) promo: 2X points on AMEX ends 12/10

Current Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promo: none

Past S&S promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):
6/20/14 - 7/10/14 4x for VGC purchase

Past Giant (PA) promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):
6/22/14 - 7/12/14 4x for VGC purchase
6/07/15 - 6/13/15 3x for VGC purchase
7/5/15 - 7/11/15 2x for VGC purchase
8/2/15 - 8/8/15 2x for VGC purchase
10/16/15 - 10/22/15 2x for VGC purchase
12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

Past Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):
6/20/14 - 7/10/14 4x for VGC purchase
12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

No, my reference was to you mentioning getting the "odd looks" from cashiers for the random dollar amounts. You don't need to split tender to explain your debit card is limited to $500 per swipe, and therefore you need to keep the total, like for RLIs along with the fee, under that amount. The odd dollar amounts make sense to them then.

Funny that I got the opposite reaction from a cashier last night. When asked how much I wanted the MO for, I said $500, and she responded, "Five hundred EVEN ?". Obviously people have been getting them for $499.36.

Somewhat related question for you folks... I recently started buying S+S gift cards, then using them to purchase groceries. Essentially getting 2x gas points as I swipe my S+S rewards card twice (once when buying GC, and again when buying groceries). The first time I did this, I purchased a $100 GC and saw the 100 points on my receipt. Recently, I purchased $350 in S+S gift cards, but still only saw 100 points added to my receipt. Is there a limit set for gas points earned from S+S gift card purchases? Thanks.

OK, now I don't have a Stop & Shop anywhere near me, but I've just this week been attempting to help a relative that does with this.

FROM THE FAQ
~~~
Q: Do all purchases count towards earning gas rewards points?
A: Only purchases made with your Stop & Shop card are eligible. Net purchase excludes alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, gift and phone cards, milk, Metro passes and any other purchases prohibited by law.
~~~

They do have periodic promotional deals where you get points on non-S&S GCs, so I'm not sure what you are getting the 100 points for.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Maybe I was incorrect in my thinking that I had gained 100 points from the S+S gift card.

Having said that, it sounds like I can go to S+S and buy a Visa/Mastercard/etc gift card (swiping my rewards card when I purchase it) then use that gift card to buy groceries (swiping my rewards card again when purchasing). Essentially getting 2x rewards (or 4x/5x during promos). I haven't paid much attention to the gift card rack, am I correct in this this thinking? Thanks for the help and replies folks!

Are you sure that the 100 points were not from a past, point-earning transaction (like actually buying groceries)? As other posters have said, you can only earn points on gift card purchases during promotional periods.

At S&S, the logs get sent (scanned?) to Ahold USA, per what the CSR told me. Not sure what happens to them after that.

Annoying cashier who wouldn't let me help tear metas even though she had witch fingernails asked a gazillion questions about the log. Was able to gather that they appear to be sent once a week. I tried yesterday hopping around picking $1500 at a time, but that was deadly time consuming. Anybody in east Montco PA that wants to trade data about Giants, shoot me a PM.

Yes, but you only get fuel points on those GCs during the promotional periods. You need to watch the ads and perhaps if you create an account at the S&S website and choose a local store, they will e-mail you when the promos start. This is what I just advised my relative to do.

Should work. They're assigning fuel points according to what you purchase, not how you pay. So if you can afford the float, stock up during the promo periods.

You may not want to hold a lot on the VGCs/MCGCs for too long a period, so you could buy S&S GCs with them and then buy groceries whenever with those.

Oh, and don't buy either the VGCs/MCGCs or the S&S GCs all at once. Spread it out, split it between stores if you have another not to far away. Don't raise any eyebrows. Some folks may misinterpret what you are doing.

Where is this? No need to give specific store locations, but near which large city is this?

Once again, the FAQ is your friend:

"We operate stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts"

S&S gas points

the only way to know about GC gas promos are from their circulars, the circulars are in my mail on the Wed before that ad starts on fri. And in the 3 S&S I frequent, you get 0 points when their is no promo. The last promo ended on 7/10, which does not coincide with their weekly sale dates. But they seem to have these promos during holidays (mothers, fathers day, Christmas/new years) and a few others thrown in. Also you get extra points for their advertised sales items, but not as much when the GC promo is working. Their prices are so high my family shops at Shoprite!

Maybe a "back to school?" I will have to start paying real price for gas soon if they don't come up with another one.
