Amiright.

You're forgetting putting the supposed name of the purchasing guru and phone number in case some irate people call him, and make him mad enough to kill it himself!! :p

Maybe.

Here's another thought if this is indeed "random" from a geographic standpoint-- perhaps they're making it cash only in districts where there's been significant fraud issues.

This way they can continue where it's apparently a viable business opportunity for CVS while eliminating the headache areas.

I guess if one can buy these in Atlanta, it will shoot down my theory!

This was my theory as well, but when I heard no mention of the memo in ATL felt it was maybe not the case... It is quite odd that a store 30 minutes away from me was mentioned in this thread as having seen the memo, but none of the stores near me in the same state have any idea about this new cash only policy and I had no problem buying VRs. I suppose it could be on a store by store basis but the whole thing is a bit odd. We really need to wait a week and see how things pan out, I dont believe anything is going to be determined for sure in the first 24 hours.

Can someone that has discovered a CVS blocking VR purchases on CC today please test purchase of a OneVanilla Visa?

mittenfingerz Mar 31, 2014 8:03 am

My first attempt in Long Island today was a no go at 9:30. Prompt came up telling the cashier alternate tender or some such nonsense.

The good news? OV worked :D

Gonna go try the rest of the area stores now and see if I can still pick some VR from the mighty VR tree that once was CVS.

It doesn't make sense to block the regular VISA/MC/AMEX GCs. I mean competition WG allows it. It's complete loss for the CVS assuming these GC purchases do generate profits.

Tried a new store yesterday in a less desirable area of Central FL with no issue.

I know what MyVanilla is but what is One Vanilla? Arent those just like the prepaid, pinless MC/Visa cards?

Got $1k no problem near me. VA but not DC area.

I am fully aware it's been around for weeks. I was trying to determine that if only some stores got updated with this prompt maybe that would be an indication of which stores will get hard coded cash only. Especially since at the moment the hard coding is varying store to store.

It's a VISA GC. It comes with PIN since it's a subject to the law.

Buddy of mine went to CVS this morning in Fairfax (Northern Virginia): he wasn't able to load his Serve card, he couldn't buy a VR. But he was able to buy OV.

No stock of VR in Winter Park, FL (Orlando) - but I bought an Vanilla Debit and no problem. The cashier is a normal one and I didn't ask, but she didn't mention anything about cash only. Also, no memo or signs signalling a change in this location either.
