Out of curiosity, how many different credit cards are you splitting the 10 VRs a month

I sort of disagree. With all the other options, there is certainly less contention for VR, and while CVS may vary, those that do allow credit card purchase (even if there is a $1K limit) now seem better stocked.

for $5000 VR costs $39.50 + cvs hassle (not on shelf, sometimes cashier act funny. I had enough) not worth it. Google is free and hassle free. Chase - free!, for both need not to go anywhere, 0 costs, no one acts weird or funny, just clicking! believe it or not, VR is fading

right now i am splitting 4/5 cards for 10K of activity (i have 2 BBs - wife and mine). I am careful with Amex activity, not so much with Visa/MC.

I'm guessing none of the Visa/MCa are Citi cards?

GreatPeer: it is all explained in various places both here and in the infamous circles and arrows on blogs. Basically VR = Vanilla Reload, a card that is used to reload various other cards, cost $3.95 + reload cost of up to $500. Some CVS allow you to purchase them with credit cards, getting the points etc, for the $3.95 charge. You can then use the card to reload say an Amex Bluebird, which you can then use to pay bills, including your credit card bill, or transfer to your bank account.

Ah... I didn't think of that. Many thanks!

LoL, really? VR has been around for at least a whole year. I have no problem getting tons of VRs monthly with the clusters of CVS stores around me. No doubt it won't last forever.

GW and Chase are only free temporarily and have actual limits built in (unlike VRs which are only limited by a third-party, CVS). If anything, I'd say those two are fading, not VR (at least for a while, much longer).

And it also depends on cards and to some extent geography. If you have a 5x TYP (and not afraid to use it, which is another story) and you value points in certain ways, buying VR at a drug store to get 5x points may outweigh other redemptions on things like GW or Chase gift cards. (If you value UR points at huge values, then of course this doesn't apply!)

And there are 5 CVS with VRs I can purchase with a credit card within 3 miles of my house. Nearest Walmart is 15 miles away in a direction I never go. So for me, VR is an easy option.

I enjoy having a combination of everything so I can spread the spending around.

translation: like me you dig the fact that you feel a bit like a trader, or some old time rum runner who has to make several stops every day... AND you have a CVS, Rite Aid, Walmart and several banks to "HIT" during your daily set of errands. Your SO never loved you so much that you OFFER to go get that gallon of milk at the supermarket! Little does she know you just spent more than the monthly mortgage on high risk no name GCs lol

:D

If you have a working Money Center Express is it easy peasy. Otherwise it may take some explaining since some cashiers have never done it, and if you reload at the service counter you could be waiting in an epic long line.

Obviously there are VR fans and will be for some time.
