Interesting issue at CVS today. Refused to sell VRs or GCs with cc. Register coded to deny. Asst Mgr came over and told me that 3 nights ago, "corporate" called to run a "test" on VRs. Mgr had to scan VRs that were in store and enter a "code" after each one, such as 49831 and 49832, etc. ($498.31, $498.32, etc.). While he was doing this, other line called from corporate because they had flags go up, and his current caller said to "ignore" it as he was already on the line with "corporate." Mgr continued to scan each VR and enter progressively higher "codes." True corporate finally got a hold of asst. mgr and got it shut down. Long story short, fraudsters somehow got over $20,000 from this scam at this one store. I'm not sure exactly how it worked, but that store is totally shut down for VRs and gcs - cash only. Any ideas how a fraudster could do this?

Manager at my CVS doesn't like me buying VRs. This store is right next to my job so the location is great. First time I went in and bought 3k worth of VR. Cashier scanned my DL and everything went smoothly.
Next day I went to do it again and the cashier was the manager. At first he told me it was cash only, I asked him if he was sure and he decided that I could pay with my credit card but only a 1k per day limit. Sure enough after that day every cashier refuses to do any amount over 1k. Bummer. I assume there is nothing I can do about this? On the one hand, I know the limit is 5k and this manager is making things up. But on the other hand, I don't want to bring attention to it. |
The cvs in my town is the same way. To me and to anyone. (I know of two others who bought vt there)
Clerks all hard wired to do max $1k I decided to show a receipt from two other area cvss to one newer clerk one day while just chatting friendly after having bought my $1k. My receipts showed the $5k plus fees... Two dif stores and recent dates. She was firm in her belief that this breaks a federal law. Thats what she said I just get $1k there. Cant change people with horse blinders on. |

You could also bring in a receipt from a neighboring store that let you do over 1K... No guarantees but usually after they see you are not trying to do something illegal (or something they think can get them in trouble) they eventually lower their guard. It could take days/weeks but is probably worth it in the long run. Or just count losses, and travel to the next store... |

In my home town cvs they appear to be too smart for my small talk. They seem to know im trying to soften them up and it aint happening. But even before vr or even vgc, everybody in town always commented that the core staff in this store seemed... Well, its the soup nazi store. They are THE cvs in a small town that needs one. None of them have left and they are all always there. Every day for years! Even the new clerks --rarely added--become like them quickly. They are fast and efficient but unchangeable.
And yet in the next town, i yap with the two ladies who i usually see to the point where id get them a xmas gift! In fact at yet another cvs in another next door town, i did just that. The main clerk of all the nice staff i see regularly is so fun to see, talk to and vr with that even if vrs ended id make a point to stop by that cvs over my home town one just to pick up q tips and say hello to the lady. My home store had two evil managers but both are gone. I guess the new one is no better. The staff acts above you and has no time for chat--even if you are in there just to buy a halmark card. Ive even moved any family prescriptions to the local family owned old school pharmacy across the street. |

No but it is north of boston. And you are very correct. It goes back to that thing i once posted about msing in different areas of the country based on wealth or politics. And in ma, people are very tight on things like large cc purchases and mos and such. Sad but true.
I ms with one hand tied behind my back. Down south is easy! |

This reminds me of a CVS right down the street from home. Tried to run in and purchase some VRs during my first month or so doing this. Little old lady, about 65+ scanned everything. Tried speaking with her and got nowhere. She then said cash. I asked if I could use a debit card to which she replied cash. Didn't say anything else to me other than cash. I'd be scared to meet her in a dark alley actually.

First post on FT, but am really curious about whether or not anyone has tried to buy a VR at the pharmacy checkout when they pick up a prescription or other drugs?
I wonder if the pharmacists could care less what you're doing it for and likely get less of an earful from corporate on things like this. |
