J class catering
Not sure if there is a separate thread but posting here for those who are curious.
Flew LHR-KUL (MH001) last week and overall was an okay/acceptable flight. Seats as expected were a bit cramped on the footwell, but the service and crew was top notch. Highly attentive, proactive refills throughout both meal services and consistently addressed by name (also the same for my travel companion who is a non-OW elite). Food was excellent but they could do with a proper wine list, understand the cost drivers may not justify returning the extensive beverage offering. However the one area where they are really weak on the coffee game…no espresso, ran out of black coffee and only offered powdered mix coffee which feels a bit cheap for their flagship route. Also they need more rotation/variety on the menu as the current one has been the same for over a year now… packaged nuts also seems out of place in J. overall a great middle of the road business class, not so bad but not so good either. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...128c0cba2.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...3f9d6fb36.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f70eb1fd4.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...fd0cb36ae.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9c093b71e.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d32496639.jpeg |

This might sound like an uneducated question, but for any frequent MH flyers, does MH offer their satay on shorter routes < 3 hours (i.e. KUL to/from SGN)?
https://www.malaysiaairlines.com/my/...xperience.html Checking the website on a sample of short routes does not seem to indicate the satay offering unlike their longer Australia, LHR, NRT routes. That would be a small disappointment (although Malaysian food in general is so tasty), but the meals themselves seem good themselves! |

On occasion, they serve satay as a snack on short-haul routes like KUL-SIN. Haven't seen that lately though.

I've had the satay on short hops to/from Penang and or Johor (I can't recall) in the past year although seem to more commonly get the roti canai with chicken curry. For once with MAB it's not obviously a cost saving thing as you'd think they pump out enough satay to keep costs low.

I had chicken satay on my flight MH628 SIN-KUL. This flight is a lunch time flight and the flight attendant commented that they do serve satay on lunch and dinner time flights KUL-SIN-KUL, but not outside this timing.

This is excellent to hear, and makes sense from a catering perspective! I have to try the ex-KUL sector of that flight then, as they must cater the outbound flight too, given the short rotation

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but have an MH J segment coming up and was wondering if any of you had tried the steamed red snapper, the Portuguese red snapper, or chicken parcel?

Recently I flew in MH J class for the first time and wasn't impressed (usually QR for long haul). The crew was mostly professional but still not as good as most of those on QR, with one or two of the cabin crew hardly smiling at all throughout the flight. They were helpful but not very attentive, with the leftover plastic bag (for the blanket / seat pad) left on the console beside my seat for most of the flight without being collected. I was also lucky to get their relatively new ex-SAS A350 plane (with direct aisle access for every seat) for my MH165 flight but the screen / controller were broken (on 2 different seats).
Back to topic, I find the menu quite underwhelming for a long haul flight of over 7 hours which departed at 8am from DOH to KUL. There was only instant coffee and there was no 'signature drink' for the airline when I asked the cabin crew (in contrast, on QR they have their refreshing lemon mint juice or Singapore Sling on SQ). The drinks menu on Y class on QR is more extensive than what's being offered here. Of course, I also miss the 'dine on demand' which was available on QR but not here, with the breakfast served around 1 hour after take off when I already had my breakfast in the lounge before boarding. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...d49f97c630.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...da0205e968.jpg When it comes to presentation and quality of food, I think there's still a lot of room for improvement particularly in terms of presentation because the food wasn't that premium compared to their competitors (MH is trying to compete with QR, JL, CX, SQ for premium sector as evident on their post-flight survey). The plastic-wrapped focaccia (one of the options for bakery) looked like the same that's being served on QR's Y class from what I could remember so I didn't take that. I think the crew could at least remove the plastic cover for the yogurt with granola when it's being served - having a dented plastic cover with sticker label on it doesn't seem so premium. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...cca308cd46.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f53f1c1f8.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5930fdf22a.jpg For comparison, this is how the exact same food (yoghurt with granola, fruit platter, croissant) was served on a tray with covid measures in effect on QR, which means the same could be replicated on MH with their tray service. QR has now resumed their normal meal service by course. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...171f1b6eb4.jpg Also, the nasi lemak portion was relatively small and presentation wasn't that good either. It would be better with a bit more green (e.g. banana leaf) such as the example on SQ below which looks more appetising: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...064d5836b2.jpg Image from: Overall I think MH J is poor value especially when it's priced similar to (or sometimes more expensive than) QR and SQ for some popular routes. While it's good to see they are now investing in new planes and seats, I think it needs a lot more investment in soft product, crew training and aircraft maintenance to remain competitive especially now that the post-pandemic travel boom is waning and fares are expected to fall. |
Here are some pics of current MH regional catering. Specifically MH797 (BKK-KUL) and MH721 (CGK-KUL). While leaps and bounds better than US3 F catering on flights of similar distances, I will say it doesn’t match up in quality to CX, SQ, and even TG. Further, the chef on call option I ordered ex-KUL (the chicken parcel) was especially poor.
