The Portuguese grilled fish! Does it taste as good as it looks?

Just flew KUL-Penang, 30-min flight. Meal was hot chicken “pancake” as the FA described it with curry or a tuna sandwich. It was a leisurely service with zero rush and all 16 pax were served. No alcohol obviously. I was hoping for the satay tho. Maybe on my KUL-Singapore sector next week.

This most likely is roti jala - best described as holey crepe, not quite pancake. :)

MH 870 SUB-KUL (ex-Surabaya) in Late Sept; Good Catering and Kind Cabin Crew!

After a couple of weeks wandering through Indonesia, my girlfriend and I headed back home, with the first journey from Surabaya to Kuala Lumpur :)

Overall, we enjoyed the meals of Indonesian and Malaysian descent, as it was similar to some of the meals we have eaten at tiny restaurants throughout Java island. The cabin crew were great, acknowledged my OWE status, always checked up on us/refill on drinks, have small conversations, and made the flight a lot more comfortable.

Menu on MH870 SUB-KUL; this was mid-morning departure of 10:00

Nasi Beringin Ikan Percik - we thought the fish was great and not too heavy for this part of day! the peanut sauce also helped to increase the yummy factor too

Beef Dendeng - the sambal lado was too spicy for my girlfriend and I 😅 it was still a delicious meal

The menu looks really interesting and my experience is these local options are way better than the beef stroganoff or grilled chicken type options - it’s bizarre they still plate it up in tinfoil.

I agree. I ordered the pearled barley pumpkin risotto from the CoC menu and it was gross. The Ayam Sambal Bali (Bali chicken sambal) was really good. MH needs to provide an english translation and a more detailed description when viewing my CoC options on manage my booking. Not everyone understands Malay Language and not everyone wants rice/sambal combo.

I agree! The Asian airlines mostly do a great job in their local or regional cuisines, but it is fair that people should have an alternate "western/international" meal as well, should Malay/Indonesian (or other Asian regional) food was not their first choice.

Chef on call is only ex-KUL, is it? Some of the options appear tasty or at least "look good" in their menu haha

ex-KUL and some other major stations like NRT/ICN/LHR/Australia. The local option is probably the best ex-KUL. I tried the western option a few times and they aren't usually the best.

Here are pics from last month's flight KUL-NRT. I also included the banana bread from my SIN-KUL flight in economy and my seatmate's Japanese meal on the Tokyo flight. Tip: if your flight has options to prebook a meal, take advantage of it.

Overall the J flight was good, it's more of being switched to an A330 from an A350 and getting a non-aisle-accessible seat (that was my fault for not checking the new seat assignment) and lack of wi-fi that disappointed me. (But new products seem to be on the horizon) Service was overall professional though assembly-line like, and turbulence meant no hot beverage service before arrival at NRT. I ordered the "Ikan Masak Lada Melaka" (Melaka style Pepper Cooked Fish) which was good overall. But the true stars of the meal were the hibiscus welcome drink, the satay, and the fresh fruit. Would I fly MH again? Yes I would. Would I recommend them? Yes I would. But not as a top pick.

Overall decent short regional flight. Crew was stellar, food was alright with the main and dessert being pretty delicious while the starter being pretty bad. However, we were on an ancient 737 with no ife, no WiFi, and surprisingly, the seats didn’t have foot or leg rests (which is surprising to see in Asia) so really just old school US first seats.
