Digital Globe doesn't consistently monitor specific regions. They likely tasked their imaging satellites to the area after the investigation started to provide the imagery. It's not like video either, these are snap shots, taken each time the satellite passes the location.

There are many, many posts here definitively ruling possibilities out. However, the fact is that electronic, mechanical and structural things sometimes fail at unexpected times, for unexpected reasons and in unexpected ways. There are countless examples. Until we know, we simply don't; and any definitive statements along the lines of "This couldn't possibly have happened" are baseless and pure speculation.

Agreed! The problem too is 24 hour news, there's no time anymore for fact checking, for just waiting to see if information is actually correct and verified, it just goes to air because there's a lot of airtime to fill. I often think that Sky/CNN etc must rub their hands in glee when there's a standoff somewhere, they can pretend to be bringing us the latest by showing a continous feed of one event, filling hours and hours of airtime. And all done on the premise that this is what people want.

I just heard a presenter on Sky annoucing that they have 'exclusive' content on the missing plane available for iPad! So it's gone so far beyond reporting on those poor missing souls, the mystery of the plane's wherabouts. It's just an information competition.

Wow the amount of info here is amazing. Keeping up is close to impossible. Having said that, I don't think I've read about the fact that there are plenty of oil and gas activities in the GOT. Hence, plenty of rigs there with the associated supply vessels, choppers, etc. Have not read anything if these have been tapped for info. Also, their operations there might explain the oil slicks. Cheers.

If that's what it is claiming to be it's definitely two boats. Looks like it could be the same two, the left hand one has that blobby feature which some have interpreted as the plane's engine and the right hand one looks similar to the one in the other image.

ETA: Maybe a large commercial trawler and a fishing factory ship?
Yes sorry I meant hypoxia. If the plane flying in that direction it would hit Indonesia and Indonesia radar would pick it up.

Please tell me these are ships or helicopters or something. http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...2014/map/11142 http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...2014/map/10167
http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...2014/map/11467

I've found some more in this area but lost the map numbers.

Unfortunetly this looks more like 2 boats to me...

(Other than that, Tomnod is working a lot better here tonight, I am using Chrome and it is fluid, not like yesterday where it was taking minutes to load a square)
I just found this image on Tomnod. http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/...2014/map/24080

https://public.dm2301.livefilestore....ure.PNG?psid=1

IMO it appears to be a smaller ship docked next to a larger ship and resembles the image posted above. Without exact co-ordinates I couldn't determine if my find was from nearby to the original image's map (the thinking being is that my image is actually the same 2 ships in an image that was taken some time after the one above)

Anyway I'm hoping this find could end speculation on what the original is.

For my own curiosity, if both images are of 2 ships and both images are not related, can anyone speculate on a nautical procedure or reason for this occurrence ? Refueling?

Your second link is broken "404". Is it 11071 or 10167? Maybe take screenshots and post that to imgur or your fav image sharing site.

Tomnod is struggling again tonight to serve up pages

11467 looks irregular. The others look like boats.

First are definitely two ships, second, link is broken as noted, 3rd, I'm thinking patrol craft or fishing boats - I found 3 or 4 of those things in the same general area.

Friendly request:

Please try to re-size your pictures to fit the normal width. We have had several folks (particularly, but not exclusively, those on mobile devices) request that the size of graphics be "normal." Thanks very much.

Whatever happened was instantaneous. There was no distress call from the pilots, and no previous hint of a technical problem.
TDB is wrong -- As I mentioned earlier, there are at least three scenarios in which the crew could have been incapacitated and the plane could have maintained level flight for a long time.

Read the Wikipedia entry about Helios Airways Flight 522. Ground crews set that plane's pressurization system to "manual" in order check for a leak, then forgot to reset the system to "auto". The plane took off, a lack of oxygen incapacitated the crew, and then the plane flew on autopilot until it ran out of fuel.

Not really sure what they can offer that has any substance until the plane is located...
