I have to disagree. Lets just compare to PacRim for now. The rooms are very similar bw the two hotels, it's as if they hired the same guy to design them. The PacRim blows the ShangriLa away when it comes to views, room service food, pool, spa and suites.

I've stayed at PacRim now 4 times and Shangri La even more, only reason is Shangri La is often cheaper by about 30% compared to PacRim.

Now PacRim Gold floor is head and shoulders above Shangri-La, it's not even close and the rates prove it.
There is no way you can compare the level of service in a hotel with ~400 rooms to one with ~100. There's never a queue for check-in and you are personally escorted to your room, staff great you by name when you return, hotel car is readily available..... It feels more personal and less corporate.

I do agree that the PacRim has stellar views, but the hotel itself is style over substance. F&B is a mess -- Oru has experimented with more concepts than can be counted. The spa is decent, but I much prefer the all suite experience at the Shangri-La.

Higher rates don't necessarily equate to a better hotel. You are simply paying a premium for the view at PacRim.

Four Seasons Hualalai with 243 rooms is head and shoulders above Shangri La Vancouver for service.

Shangri La room service hasn't impressed me yet. I agree ORU has experimented too much but room service at PacRim has always been good. Lobby lounge and Giovanni have been great for food.

Rates do indicate demand but at the end of the day PacRim gold floor is the best option in YVR. But the "regular" rooms are my 2nd choice if I can justify the rate compared to Shangri La, 4S and rosewood. However all these properties are top 10 in Canada in my books.

Shangri-La Vancouver Review

I recently stayed at the Shangri-La Vancouver and booked through American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts, so I was upgraded to a beautiful one bedroom suite. I posted a review of my experience on my blog here. Definitely check it out if you're considering the Shangri-La - it's an amazing hotel and a great option for Vancouver!

I stayed in different hotels during my prolonged stay in Vancouver 2 years ago, including the Shangri-La and the Pacific Rim Fairmont. The Shanri-La is a top hotel, no doubt about it, and it feels very luxurious, so I totally agree with all others here that the Shangri La hotel is an excellent choice for a Vancouver stay. The staff is very friendly, and the rooms are large and nicely decorated. I also recommend their restaurant for dinner : delicious !!!

Unfortunately, the Shangri-La is inferior to the Pacific Rim hotel because the latter scores better on some points :
- location : the Shangri La occupies the lower 15 floors of the tallest skyscraper of Vancouver in the middle of the city, so the rooms offer some view on the streets below. However, the new Fairmont Pacific Rim is located at the water edge, with tremendous views on Burrard Inlet and the possibility of a nice stroll along the water.
- swimming pool & hottube is larger and nicer at Fairmont Pacific Rim
- IMHO, rooms feel more spacious and modern at Fairmont Pacific Rim, and some have balconies with fire pit.

All in all, you cannot go wrong with the Shangri La Vancouver, but if you have the choice, go for the Fairmont Pacific Rim instead, which must be one of the best city hotels I ever encountered in the world

Thought I'd add to this thread as my husband and I stayed at the Rosewood last weekend and really liked it. We had quite a different stay to the one described by TRAVELSIG...

We booked a Deluxe City View Room, which I believe is what we got (there was no mention of an upgrade at check-in). The room itself was quite spacious with a wall of windows on one side. It's possible that we were lucky because our room faced the Four Seasons and we were actually positioned above the entrance to the Pacific Centre Mall, so we didn't feel like the surrounding buildings were blocking out the sun, and in fact, we had a good bit of natural light.

The room was furnished with a king sized bed, plus a small sofa and armchair with coffee table. The bathroom was truly enormous - one of the biggest I've seen outside of an Aman, and certainly the biggest city hotel bathroom I've had. The bed was very comfortable, and importantly, I found the pillows to be comfortable (I'm fairly picky when it comes to pillows).

We booked through David O – the Virtuoso amenities were $100 hotel credit (which was usable toward parking), daily breakfast up to $30 per person per day, and early check-in/late check-out (which we did not need). We also benefited from a 3rd night free promotion that was on. I found that the free wifi was more than adequate for our needs, although we didn’t try to do anything particularly taxing (no Netflix streaming or anything). I’ve been in some hotels with awful standard wifi, and this was not one of them.

We ate breakfast at Hawksworth restaurant downstairs, and thought it was great. So great, in fact, that after our first breakfast on Thursday, we inquired at the concierge about possibly getting a reservation on the Saturday night of our stay. Unfortunately, they were fully booked, so we were prepared to keep our reservation at another restaurant. I was, however, pleasantly surprised to get a phone call on Saturday morning from Hawksworth letting us know that they had had a cancellation and asking if we were still interested in dining with them that evening. I thought that it was a nice touch that they had added us to their waitlist without us asking. We found dinner at the restaurant to be superb – my husband is still raving about the soup he had, saying it is one of the best restaurant dishes he’s had in a very long time.

Overall, we thought the service was very good in an understated way, the restaurant was outstanding and the hard product was excellent. We’re already talking about our next visit.

Yes, I agree, Hawksworth really is outstanding. One of the better spots in Vancouver.

Glad you enjoyed your stay - sounds lovely - and thank you for reporting back.

Just a quick note to update this...we had another weekend in Vancouver this past weekend, and am pleased to report that the Rosewood lived up to our now high expectations. Funnily enough, we ended up in the room right next to the one we had last year! Hawksworth was, once again, outstanding for both breakfast and dinner. Service was excellent but unobtrusive. We've concluded that this is one of our favorite city hotels, if not our favorite. Highly recommended.

Is this the official Vancouver thread - last commented on nearly 3 years ago? I'm really surprised there is not more discussion around the city, especially as they have well known brands operating, and a lot of contributors on these here forums be from the neighbouring country. We're in Clayoquot in mid-August, so will stay for a few days prior in Vancouver. Please don't tell me I have to stay in a Fairmont and I must, absolutely, definitively, stay in The Rosewood instead. Please.

The Fairmont Pacific Rim is an excellent hotel with several rooms nice water-views over to Stanley Park and the seaplane harbour (if that is how you are getting into Vancouver)
You can even have a proper balcony.
They also have a club level and a lively lobby area

The Rosewood remains my favourite option, I would would gladly stay at either. Maybe the edge to Fairmont PacRim in the summer

I live near Vancouver and have stayed at both the Fairmont Pacific Rim and the Rosewood. I prefer the Fairmont Pacific Rim because I love to watch the sea planes come and go all day. Be sure to stay in a Harbour view room. The Rosewood lobby and bars are a lot darker than the public areas of the Pacific Rim. The hotel car at Pacific Rim can get you to some great restaurants in the Yaletown area. Blue Water Cafe and Ciopinno’s Medeterranean Grill are good in my experience.
