Given that the previous consolidated thread was started in 2008, it is time to start a new thread, beginning with an excellent review by KatW.

I agree they should’ve mention Charles forte, who had a great collection of top end hotels. It was off they didn’t as season 1 of the series had a whole episode on the balmoral and the Forte legacy.

However, I wouldn’t describe a $28m refurb of the rooms an extensive refurb like the first, they basically rebuilt the whole interior in the first refurb.

To be honest, a full renovation isn't even necessary as the rooms have such great bones. Infrastructure is great, tons of space already, floorplans excellent... they just need to update the FF&E and add some tech, like Lutron. All this will be done with this renovation and frankly their hard product may then be better than Bulgari and even Cheval Blanc.

In terms of hard product, how do the Paris luxury hotels stack up? Scented’s post indicates that Cheval Blanc is at the top now, while MacMyDay’s review suggested that Crillon was the top contender.

I think that's point of a controversial discussion

I just don’t see it with the CB. The hard product is so glitzy and layouts so uninspired as to be boring. There’s zero personality or sense of place. And at this level, those things matter.

It could be that I prefer discreet luxury rather than something so blingy. To me, Paris doesn’t need to resort to parlor tricks that Vegas or Dubai does. CB is another Dubai 5 star gimmick than a genuine grand dame.

I am not too sure about CB to be honest... as I wrote before, George V might be leading the pack again following the rooms and suites renovation. But would have (and will...) try CB soon to have a better opinion on this!

not to mention serious noise isolation issues that shouldn’t exist at this level, even if it is a protected building.

The immediate surroundings of CB are also not great. There's always a lot of people, especially the lines of people trying to get into La Samaritaine. Part of the reason I love La Reserve is the quiet and especially the interior garden in summer!

Unless you're looking to shop, there isn't that much near La Reserve. CB is very well situated to walk into the 2rd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th.

I actually prefer the relative isolation. Still close enough to major metro lines and other things to get to key places quickly. But isolated enough to be quiet and away from the hustle and bustle.

A Wonderful Stay at Four Seasons George V, Paris (45 Photos)

FOUR SEASONS GEORGE V PARIS

Our December stay at Four Seasons George V, Paris ranks among the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had and I am so glad we did not cancel the trip in response to recent developments related to the pandemic that emerged just days before our departure. Due to Paris’ health pass system we felt very safe during our 10 day visit and especially so within the comfort of the George V.

The wonderful service began before we even set foot inside the property when we were met at the jet-bridge by a hotel representative who whisked us through the private customs and border control entry point typically reserved for Air France La Premiere customers. We were reunited with our luggage in record speed and directed to a comfortable Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van waiting for us outside the terminal.

Check In

Upon arrival at the hotel we were warmly greeted at the door by several members of the guest relations management team who were already anticipating our arrival. Check in formalities were brief and we barely had time time to take in the stunning lobby decorations before being escorted to our rooms which were equally as beautiful.

Room

We were booked into a Premier King and a Four Seasons Suite (special thanks to the impeccable assistance of @besvisor) both of which were exceptionally spacious,  comfortable, and meticulously maintained.  The photos on the Four Seasons website, though nice, do not fully convey the sheer luxury around every corner and the highly quality materials and furnishings found throughout.  Both rooms featured fresh flower arrangements that were refreshed several times during our stay. Fans of the renowned Four Seasons bed will not be disappointed and the Rivolta Carmignani linens used here are of a significantly higher quality than those found in other Four Seasons properties. Electronic blackout shades help to ensure an excellent night’s sleep.  Bathrooms are large with separate tubs and showers (as usual) with fantastic water pressure and plenty of oversized bath sheets. Bvlgari bath amenities have now been replaced by generously sized bottles of Guerlain - Eau Imperiale soaps which have a very pleasant scent.

Room 327 (Premier King):

Housekeeping

Housekeeping was fantastic throughout our stay and all special request were meticulously followed. Unlike most hotels which provide a welcome amenity upon check in only, we received a variety of different treats regularly. In addition, our rooms received fresh fruit bowls and large bottles of Evian water which were replenished daily.  During nightly turndown service housekeeping left additional bottles of water on the nightstands, slippers and foot mats, and branded glass cleaning cloths for our glasses and devices. The only disappointment was the absence of cord ties for our various electronic charging cables which has become a fairly standard offering in most luxury hotels these days. The complementary shoe shine was excellent and the valets even place shoe trees in the shoes before carefully wrapping them in tissue paper.

Dining

We enjoyed breakfast at Le Gallerie each morning and while the menu wasn’t extensive, we never tired of the options and the quality was excellent. The hot chocolate is a must try and the pastries and breads were all delicious. Ordering the American breakfast is a multi course affair which is overwhelming initially, but the waitstaff quickly learned all of our preferences and fine tuned the experience to our liking. Special thanks to Julian who always took such great care of us and was a pleasure getting to know. We also enjoyed dinner at the hotel’s 1 Michelin starred restaurant Le George which was both elegant, yet unpretentious. While perhaps not as grand of an experience as a meal at 3 stared Le Cinq across the courtyard, it was nevertheless an excellent meal served in a beautiful and contemporary room.  A table was always held for us at Le Bar for nightly apéritifs which was greatly appreciated given that the bar was quite popular among both hotel guests and locals alike.

Concierge

The concierge team was of great assistance both before and during our stay helping to arrange vip access to various sites and museums as well as securing reservations at popular restaurants, even at short notice, after changing our minds on several occasions.  Many thanks to Franck, Toni, and Julia who provided us with wonderful recommendations and candid opinions.

Service

As wonderful as the hard product was at George V, it was the service that truly sets this hotel apart from others. We were routinely greeted by name name by almost all employees (no idea how they managed to pull that off as the hotel was relatively busy) and all interactions  were genuine—it was quite apparent that they not only took pride in their work, but in the hotel itself.  I suspect that the length of our stay played a part in some of this, but we were made to feel like the only guests in residence and all staff went out of their way to help make our stay memorable and enjoyable.  It’s also worth noting that the hotel does an excellent job of protecting the health and safety of its guests and employees. As mentioned earlier, Paris requires presentation of a health pass to gain admittance to many indoor environments. The George V requires this to be presented to gain entry to the hotel itself, not just its restaurants, unlike most other top hotels in the city. Additionally, housekeeping left fresh health kits in the rooms containing face masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes. Although we brought plenty of supplies with us, it was nice to know that the hotel was always there for backup.

Location

The location near the Eiffel Tower and within quick walking distance of Avenue Montaigne was perfect and not nearly as congested as Place Vendome.

Overall

It goes without saying that the level of luxury and service provided by the Four Seasons George V does not come cheap, but at no time did we ever feel “nickel and dimed.”  If you are considering staying here I wouldn’t hesitate doing so as the hotel is truly special. Although there are newer properties that have recently opened, including the new Bulgari Hotel directly across the street, I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Paris and eagerly await my next visit to the legendary George V.

Trying to decide between Plaza Athenee, Le Bristol and Le Meurice for summer holidays next year. What's the recommendation of this group? Plaza Athenee seems to be in a price bracket by itself.
